I haven't really kept up with the promotion for a while, so I'm curious: what specifically did you see that convinced you Kong is being set up as a hero rather than a more neutral monster? I mean I've seen enough to know the humans aren't exactly innocent (which is in the tradition of KK movies), but that doesn't automatically mean that Kong is a hero this time around.
You're right, I guess I shouldn't assume that. It's just that Kong has pretty much always been portrayed as a sympathetic monster, so it's hard to imagine that they'd make him malevolent/destructive enough to set off LegendaryGoji's MUTO-sense and prompt a battle. There's also the fact that he's "our" giant monster, an American creation, so it's hard to believe an American film series would make the "domestic" monster the villain and the "imported" monster the hero. (Then again, the Japanese did just that in King Kong vs. Godzilla, but then, Godzilla had already been the villain in both his prior appearances, so it's not quite the same.)
