Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations

http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/IDIC

IDIC seems simple enough as an advertising campaign but what does this philosophy mean (other then the obvious) and how is it applied to the things we do and-or know?,

I question this as an idea or a study in thought constructions.

How would one find the structure that could represent these diverse combinations? And as we go to the extremes and oppose these opposites is that not the true IDIC is it?

Is this a philosophy for creating new ways to think, maybe but what are they?

If we can fill in the blanks with anything and everything of diverse combinations what then are we doing, and what are the results of this?

Frankly, I'm pretty darn skeptical of IDIC as it stands.

"Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations"?

It sounds as if nothing should be excluded--no point of view (no matter how bigoted, vulgar, or otherwise disgusting), no activity (no matter how criminal or otherwise harmful to others), nothing.

How can society function without limits? If we are to accept infinite diversity in infinite combinations...than there are no limits, morality is relative, and such things as criminal law ("Illegal? By what standard?") become irrelevant.

"But that isn't what it means, Rush! It just means tolerance for POVs that aren't your own."

Really? Again, tolerance can only go so far--can you tolerate intolerant people? Can you tolerate someone who believes in a Master Race? Can you tolerate someone who believes that rape should be legalized?

No? But what about infinite diversity in infinite combinations?

Can you tolerate murdurers and serial killers? Can you tolerate rapists? Can you tolerate pedophiles?

No? But, again--what about infinite diversity in infinite combinations?

However, if you're going to put limits on IDIC to account for that...then it's not really infinite, is it? The diversity isn't infinite, and the combinations aren't really infinite.

Frankly...I'm amazed the Vulcans, of all people, never realized that. IDIC, as it stands, is illogical.

(I actually like Peter David's explanation in the YA novel Worf's First Adventure. Soleta explains to Worf that humans claim that the Vulcan word "idic" stands for Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, but it really doesn't.)

then try to exclude one thing or another and you find that they are all excluded IMO.

Just give me a limit that society has not broken at this point in one fashion or another???

What limit are you putting on society that it has not passed and gone well beyond with "flying colors?"

what IDIC means is infinite points of view for and infinite diverse society in all combinations but then... well Rush you know what is next beyond pure anarchy? ,, perfection of all things as they really are already perfect we just need to realize all this ..

No? But what about infinite diversity in infinite combinations?

Can you tolerate murdurers and serial killers? Can you tolerate rapists? Can you tolerate pedophiles?

we may not tolerate any of "them" but they exist so we have no choice. right?

No? But, again--what about infinite diversity in infinite combinations?

It was a advertising ploy that became a philosophical ideal.

but in site of the closed minded populist that are out there we can say that their idea of IDIC is such that it is a negative spiral into hell ... sad that people have such negative realties and make other people live in their hells with them...

I did not think you were that negative Rush? to look at the dark side of this?

Well...I'm with Edmund Burke on this. If a new, revolutionary ideal comes out, it's always best to hold its feet to the fire--especially if it's "utopian" in some sense or another.

to quote Edmund Burke...

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men and women to do nothing!!!

Which compliments the ideas of putting the feet to the fire. :) as most spiritual principles do complement each other.
