Kobayashi Maru

Man of Steel

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Out of curiosity, since Romulan war picks up where Maru left off, is anyone reading it to catch up?

Re: The Kobayashi Maru

I read Kobayashi Maru again because of the plotline being so detailed and complicated when it came to the Romulan intrigue. I'm looking forward to getting the new Enterprise book next week to read and find out what happened after that cliffhanger ending in KM.

To avoid confusion: The Kobayashi Maru is a TOS novel written by Julia Ecklar, in which Kirk, Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov tell their respective KM experiences in flashback while stranded in a shuttle. The ENT novel that leads into The Romulan War is simply called Kobayashi Maru, with no definite article. It appears to be the latter book that this thread is discussing, so the title is misleading.

Re: The Kobayashi Maru

I have not read or bought Kobayashi Maru yet. I will probably do so before The Romulan War releases and then buy and read that one too.

Re: Kobayashi Maru (ENT)

How do you mean "to catch up" ?
I read it straight after The Good That Men Do, before The Romulan War was announced. I thought it was a good book. Not great, but good :bolian:

Re: Kobayashi Maru (ENT)

I haven't read it and have no intention to, what I do have to ask is, why have you started another thread with the same question as here, couldn't you just either modify the title yourself or ask a Mod to do so?

Re: Kobayashi Maru (ENT)

Why not? There's loads of other crap on here too, this makes little difference.

Sometimes it's easier to just start fresh when people are giving you an unnecessarily hard time.

Re: Kobayashi Maru (ENT)

I read Kobayashi Maru again because of the complicated plot dealing the Romulans and the events leading to the Earth/Romulan wars also the cliffhanger ending leaves you wanting to know what happens in the next book. I thought the book was good .I can't wait to get my copy of the new Enterprise novel next week.:techman:

Re: The Kobayashi Maru

I've read Kabayashi Maru. I might read it again before reading The Romulan War, not sure yet. Depends when I get it and what else is going on.

If the mods, catch it, by all means let them fix it.

I, on the other hand, do not know how to.

Christopher was right. I forgot about the TOS one so thanks Chris for pointing it out.

Marc, the appropriate way to handle this is to either PM Rosalind or myself to fix the thread title for you or even better... use the "Notify Mod" button on your first post if you don't know how to change it.

Don't post the same thing like that, that is spam.

Sorry.

I never had the chance as I was out all day.

Usually I do though.

Can you fix it so people know I am referring to ENT?

I finished Kobayashi Maru last week, wanted to wait to read it unitl it was close to the release date for The Romulan War. I'm hoping this is a good one.

Is it necessary for me to read Kobayashi Maru before Raptor's Wing? I read several luke warm reviews for that book. I'm interested in the details of the Romulan War but I wouldn't want to skip KM if I'll be confused by not reading it.

KM covers the buildup to the Romulan War. It's pretty essential reading to understand how it all came about. For that matter, so is The Good That Men Do.

And don't listen to anyone else; I, at least, LOVED both prior books. Opinions vary, make your own. (And if you don't like TGTMD or KM, I'd hazard a guess that you wouldn't like the first Romulan War book either. Same author team... well half of it anyway, same editor, same ongoing plotlines.)

Yep. Ask about virtually any novel here and you'll find someone who thinks it's one of the best books ever written and someone else who thinks it's one of the worst. There are a few books that have more supporters than detractors here that I don't like; there are some that have many more detractors than supporters that I think aren't bad at all. It's all subjective, you have to try it for yourself to really know whether you'll like it.

(It's a shame that few of the people who ask whether a given book is any good ever come back to tell us whether they read it and agreed with what they were told here.)

Yep again.

FWIW, my expectations for the new book aren't terribly high. Didn't care much for Last Full Measure, liked The Good That Men Do but was bothered by a few things, including the writing style, and found Kobayashi Maru mediocre. But I'll read it.

I don't really think it is. Though the declaration of war does occur in the book, I'm sure there'll be some exposition in Romulan War that covers that. I wasn't all that impressed with KM and I thought the reason war was declared didn't make much sense. The Good that Men Do was much better and I'm hoping RW is more like that than KM.
