The ships in my Trek-inspired universe are closer to a Geof Darrow interpretation of Star Wars than the sleek, smooth ships of Star Trek. They are meant to represent a cruder, more industrial future.
These ships don't have warp drive. Instead, they travel along "slideways": Corridors of space that have been polished smooth by millions of years of near-light travel, which has created bubbles of contracted ("warped") space that allows transit time between stars to be reduced considerably.
When it comes to the destroyers of 'U-Fed", I wanted them to have the silhouette of a Constitution class when seen head-on, only to have their distinctive, aircraft carrier-inspired design revealed when seen at an angle.
