Knight Rider 2008 Series SPOILERS

But the cost was that the movie (and I'm speaking only of the movie, since obviously I haven't seen the weekly incarnation yet) came off as less imaginative than the original. (Well, at least in terms of the technology. I'd hardly call the original show imaginative in terms of characterization or storytelling.)

I write it off more to "cost" issues, as in money. The movie looked like it was done on a shoe-string budget even with it being turned into a Ford commercial. The footage above definitely looks like they have a bit more dinero to play around with (see the gimble in the KITT cave).

My only quibble with the transformation sequence is how did they get from the flatbed into the driver and passenger seats? I can buy the concept (though it does kind of bring up the Odo mass morphing issue from DS9; can he turn into any Ford vehicle of any size), but it could easily go from "neat" to "corny" if they overuse it.

Making the AI seemingly less advanced -- more robotic and less emotive/witty than the original KITT -- had nothing to do with cost; it was purely a writing and directing choice.

I was referring to KITT's abilities and design, which have been apparently enhanced for the series. The AI I think is mainly due to Val Kilmer's delivery; the one snippet of Will Arnett as KITT in the first trailer sounded less flat than what we ended up getting.

The funny part is, if you listen to Kilmer's delivery in the Ford commercials shown during the movie's premiere, he had a lot more personality and even some humor than his delivery in the actual movie. He clearly has the ability to deliver the lines with more personality. It makes me hope that the delivery is a bit better in the series (commercials start at about the 1:40 mark): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqemKcXUGfA

Ugh. The TV movie was bad and this doesn't look like an improvement. Ford should just have their ad people make one-hour ads instead of funding a dopey TV show. An hour-long ad would be less painful to watch and that's essentially what this "series" is anyway.

I really like the new Mustang, and I really like the Knight Industries Two Thousand; however, I hate the new Mustang as the Knight Industries Three Thousand.

But my opinion and a quarter are worth twenty-five cents. :p

Well, I wasn't exactly expecting him to say "I'm your huckleberry, Michael," but for whatever reason, his voice in the movie sounded so mechanical as to imply that his KITT was less advanced than the previous KITT. Hopefully they'll let him expand his range for the series.

Yeah Kilmer sounded way too flat and robotic in that preview clip. Half the fun of the original show came simply from William Dainel's witty and engaging performance as KITT. Without that, I just don't know.....

I was turned off when I found out that KITT was a Mustang. For one thing, I fucking hate Ford; and for another, the Mustang is a women's car. How fucking manly is aguy driving around fighting crime in his sister's pony car? Get something with a little more muscle! How about a Charger, or a Corvette? Hell, they could've gotten a new Camaro like they used in Transformers, fix it up, paint it black, paint a huge "screamin' chicken" on the hood and call it a Trans Am. That would be infinitly cooler than that cliched piece of chick car shit they're passing off as KITT.

:wtf:

The Mustang GT500KR is a chick car? It has 500+ horsepower at the crank. How much more muscle do you want? That car will rape the Charger SRT8. It does the quarter mile in 12.1 seconds, besting the C6 Corvette and just a few tenths shy of the Z06.

I'm not a Mustang fan either, but to call it a chick car that needs more muscle is retarded.

I was thinking that too. The new Mustang may be seriously overexposed (and maybe not the best choice for KITT), but it's still a pretty badass looking car.

Hell, I wish I had one. :D

We just need to look the other way at this: http://www.seriouswheels.com/cars/top-2008-Ford-Mustang-WIP-Edition.htm

This looks fun as all hell, plenty of fodder for drinking games and stupid, impossible action sequences.

Of course, the thought of that might give some of you joyless fucks an embolism. Whoops.

Ha ha, if he ever says that I'll bust a gut. :)

A lot of people read it that way (less advanced) and I can definitely see that. I guess I viewed it as this AI is less experienced than our beloved KITT 2000 was, and thus really did not have a lot of emotional context to work from. In the original series, I found KITT's delivery was fairly plain at first, but developed over the course of the first season. I really am curious how much of the (comparatively) flat delivery is a conscious choice on the part of the directors/writers/producers and Kilmer himself.

Die-hard fanboys tend to forget that. Yes, the original KITT AI had to grow and mature.

^^^ I certainly thought it was deliberate, they seemed to make it a point that this was sort of a "fresh" KITT and it makes sense to have KITT's AI grow through the series both from a technical standpoint and a dramatic one (i.e. character development).

Plus, bear in mind that the original KITT had quite a bit of interaction with the lab techs, Wilton Knight, and Devon Miles before Michael came along. The Knight Three Thousand (appears to have) only interacted with Dr Graiman.
