Klingon Z-Y "Zen-Yaken" Fighter

This is something for the next cover I'm whipping up. This is one of the main Klingon fighters used throughout the general War. Like all fighters, it packs an extraordinary punch for its size, with a pair of phaser-3's and four drone missiles.

These shots show the Z-Y painted in Seltorian markings. This is because when the Seltorians arrived in our galaxy, the Tholians had been producing fighters for years already(fighters were not used in the Tholian home galaxy at all), and were unable to deal with them. The Klingons, wanting the Tholians gone, agreed to sell many of their fighters to the Seltorians in hopes of speeding along the Tholians' demise.

This model isn't terribly detailed, but that's mainly because on the cover it will be on they're going to be relatively tiny. But it still conveys the basic idea.

Comments welcome. :)

I thought the fighters were bought from the Klingons and flown by Klingon mercenaries - that the bugs themselves stayed aboard their gunboats.

Would those fighters have Seltorian, as opposed to Klingon, markings if they were Klingon fighters with Klingon pilots?

Looks cool, by the way.

I asked SVC the same questions. He told me the bugs bought the fighters from the Klingons, and painted them in their own markings. They didn't pilot the fighters themselves, but they didn't use Klingon mercenaries either. The Klingon navy basically "loaned" them pilots.

You knew my questions before I even asked them?

Damned Andromedan mind-probes!

Just you wait until we get up into that Cloud...

*shakes fist*

(Kidding!)

I had the same thought. But SFB does include references to planetary assaults and planetside fighter bases. Are drones ever used in an atmosphere?

According to the SFB basic rules, drone engines have a fixed speed that runs until burnout (like an impeller-drive missile in the Honorverse), and the slowest of them move 8 hexes a turn, which equals warp 2. Not something I'd want to use in an atmosphere.

But I'm new to the SFU, so what do I know?

On a side note, as I read through the SFB rules, I can't help but wonder if David Weber was a big SFB player back in the day...

Why do missles/drones in space need fins?

I'm not totally sure. Unicron's answer is probably the truest, but if I had to guess I'd say they're for atmospheric manuevering(they can be used in an atmosphere, although it's not always the friendliest gesture to anyone on the ground).

From what i remember the large fins are cooling for the Drones engine and the others are for the tracking/guidence systems.

Woohhhhhhhhhhhhaa!

Finally, a fighter! :D

When I was reading the Prime Directive RPG 2nd edition books I tried to imagine the fighters. I had to use the Star Wars, Babylon 5 and nuBSG ones. I drooled over the Fighter Operations book for the other ADB series (which escapes my recall at the moment). I was ticked off the Starfleet Command video games didn't have fighters.

Did I mention I have a thing for fighters? I'm probably the only person who doesn't look at porn when the wife isn't home...

How much atmospheric maneuvering are they going to be doing at warp 2? Warp 2.29 for Type II, III, and V.

Just sayin'.

SFC has fighters. They're AI controlled only, which reduces their effectiveness, but they're in there.

Initially, my first reaction is that I don't like the design. Of course I'm not a big fan of the straight 60's TOS design aesthetic in general. I more enjoy the TOS-Movie Era designs and later.

But...

I honestly don't know what this is supposed to be from. SFC?

Some sort of Tabletop RPG?

Anyone mind filling me in? Thanks.
