Good point! It's nothing to do with tech transfers or spying, just that the universal translator isn't very imaginative when translating foreign ship names.

You flip it and it looks a bit like this ship.

It's not unreasonable to think it could've been a prototype of some sort.

Ive often thought that many of the planet names/ship names and even species names are just Human takes on them from the universal translator.

Probably why most ship commanders are called "captain" too. I imagine most worlds have a specific title that ends up being substituted, and for that matter, so probably are other ranks.

For my mileage, they probably just stole the plans, not an actual ship. I'd hope Starfleet wasn't that incompetent. Then again, there were a lot of incompetent Commodores roaming around, and it would nicely explain that apparently aberrant grey hull color...
