Klingon Computer (The Voyage Home)

I've seen The Voyage Home over a dozen times (conservatively), and something just hit me today. The computer on the Klingon bird of prey had pretty detailed information about a species that went extinct before the Klingons ever met humans. How do you suppose the information got there?

My guess is that Klingon Imperial Intelligence got to a Federation database somewhere and just copied everything, figuring that you never know what information is handy to know about your adversaries.

In TVH the Klingon ship didn't even have the same bridge that it had in TSFS. Maybe during the time on Vulcan between the two movies, there were a lot of upgrades, including uploading the Federation database to the Klingon ship's computers.

They probably spent as much time as possible on Vulcan so Spock could recover and they wouldn't face court martial immediately, so they got all the maintenance and upgrades they could get

I also wonder what was going on at Starfleet Intelligence regarding the Klingon ship. If some US Navy personnel who had disobeyed orders returned home in a Chinese or Russian sub of the coast of Oregon, even if it was an older model, you can bet that the CIA or somebody would be checking it out and flying those people to their court martial by some other method.

Um... That's what happened in the movie. They were flown directly to their court martial hearing.

They must have something like the internet only on an interstellar level. They can download from it whatever they want as long as it's not classified information.

They were on Vulcan for how many months? Vulcans no doubt have their own catalogs of Earth records so I see no reason why it couldn't be uploaded for reference.

Not just the novelization. When they're going through preflight just before leaving Vulcan...

KIRK: Systems report. Communications?
UHURA: Communications systems all ready, sir. Communications officer is as ready as she'll ever be.

SULU: Guidance is functional. Onboard computer will interface with Federation memory bank.
KIRK: Weapons systems?

Kirk and his crewmates flew the Klingon ship from Vulcan to Earth, saving Earth via a time travel adventure on the way. They may have gotten a ride from where they released the whales to their hearing, but that's not the part of their voyage I'm talking about. Starfleet Intelligence dropped the ball in a big way by not repossessing the ship on Vulcan at the earliest opportunity.

Vulcans have always excelled at giving Starfleet the finger. I suspect there's a non-extradition clause in their membership.

A team of Vulcans is seen overhauling the Bounty to prepare it for its trip to Earth. Obviously, they loaded the Federation's regular database into the Klingon ship's computer.

Since the Klingon ship questions have been answered very intelligently, maybe you all can help with a Khan question, too. If McCoy got everything that was not of Spock’s body in the engine room, how could Spock make the repair and have the meaningful conversation with Kirk afterward?

Yes, even Kirk assumes that Spock memories continue AFTER the transfer. "You saved the ship, don't you remember?" How can he remember his Katra was already in McCoy's head when that happened?


Unless... the Midmeld establishes a link and ensures that everything experienced by Spock AFTER it is downloaded LIVE into McCoy's head.

So in that case Spock could even remember his own death.

Here's my impression I've had since watching it: the meld was basically opening the door but his katra didn't punch out until the body expired.
