I managed to get ahold of a copy of Klingon Academy, which installed just fine on my new laptop. But it has trouble playing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Add hidden evil to the list. I love going to garage sales and antique stores. Anyway, I can't seem to get that to work either. Any suggestions?

Try running the games as administrator, and in compatibility mode with XP for example.

So far as I know, Klingon Academy is incompatible with Windows Vista and windows 7. The starfield background flashes white making it next to impossible to play.

As much as I enjoy KA, it's a game that was rushed into completion and its engine was grafted ontop of Starfleet Academy. Many bugs are present.

The game is pretty much unplayable in Vista and Win 7. As for the flashing starfield problem, I've been told that if you turn the "Detailed Starfield" option off, it might help a bit, but it's by no means a guarantee.

It's playable with WinXP and older though, although you may run into firelag problems and the screen blacking out.

This is rubbish!

I bought Windows 7 Professional for the windows XP mode, you know, the virtual machine that is kind of what mac has, the "parallel desktop". I did this because I miss Klingon Academy so much!

Unfortunately direct X applications (such as Klingon Academy!) won't run. The whole virtual machine-thingy was designed for "business applications" according to an email I received from Microsoft tech support

Well, I guess I didn't read the fine print on that one!

I'm going to get a dual boot program and see if I can put win 98 on this baby. I'll have to install generic drivers for everything, it may not even work, so wish me luck. I'll report back in a couple of weeks

windows 98 on a machine of present day?
finding the drivers will likely be a mess (to say the least) because the biggest obstacle you'd be faced with are the gpu drivers, and finding those for Win 98 is quite possibly unlikely.

You would be better off trying with XP, although 98 might also work, who knows.
as I said, finding the drivers would be a challenge.

Great game. I could barely get KA to keep running in XP, I have never been able to get the game stable on Vista, and haven't even tried it on Windows 7 yet. Usually it would kick me out to the desktop after only a few minutes of gameplay on Vista. Would love to be able to run this game smoothly again, really enjoyed it.

You are right, finding drivers will be hard as I had mentioned previously, but I am confident that using generic drivers will get me enough power to play the game. We'll see though!

My motherboard is '98 compatible so no problems there

You're right again that finding drivers for XP would be much simpler, but I still had a lot of problems in XP as well Vista whilst running KA. I'm hoping '98 will fix it.

Too bad KA didn't have a DOS mode as it's easy to find emulators

PS
Klaitu, I like your picture, is that Roger Wilco from Space Quest 5??? Love that game/series!!

IT WORKS!!!

Hey everyone, great news! I got Klingon Academy to work flawlessly in windows XP! Here's how: it requires spending at least $1200, or at least knowing a girl/woman.

Let me explain. KA works wonderfully using an iMac running Windows XP via boot camp. As customizing an iMac is fairly limited ("would you like your mouse wired or wireless?"), we can be pretty sure that any aluminium iMac with the standard integrated graphic unit is going to work. My girlfriend bought her iMac around Christmas of '07 just FYI, and to the best of my knowledge the current iMacs still use the same IGU for their base model

This is excellent news, I'm looking forward to playing for days on end! I'll put up a video on youtube and post the link here once I've played for awhile.

You may not use parallel desktop as that does not support direct X

Have fun!!!

I use WinXP natively and KA has never given me any serious problems - just a few minor inconviences. The only time I found KA unplayable in XP is if you're using some of the latest Nvidia drivers which slows KA to a crawl.

Will I got it to work on Windows 7. But then I had to reformat my hard drive because of a pesky little virus that none of the AV programs I used could get rid of it, and now I can't get it to install.

Well i just got StarFleet academy running perfectly for the first time since i upgraded from Me XP way back in 2002, could never get it to run in XP no ,atter what i tried, But W7 seeems to love it.

Will give KA a go next.

As for the OP problems what kind of trouble are you having in running it, even to this day KA is a big beasty of a game with everything on, all those particle and explosions and debris can really kill the old frame rates.

I purchased an older Panasonic Toughbook (they were selling them for $50 at my job) that has Windows 2000 Pro installed on it. I have tons of really old PC games that i haven't played in years, KA being one of them. I'll take a stab at seeing if I can get it to work and let everyone know what happens.

I use a Mac at home, so I'm not too up to date with PC's anymore. Does anyone see any issues trying to get it to run or have any advice, from past experience?

just go to setting and set your screen resolution appearance..i also got this problem and set my resolution...otherwise tell me again completely what error come when you try to play it?

It's actually working now (mostly). The only real issue it has at the moment is a "Strobe Light of Seizure Doom" effect during some of the missions that I haven't been able to get rid of yet.

Still playable in my opinion though, and no adverse effects to the "SLSD"

*twitch* damn...

Oddly enough, (apparently!) the strobing effect doesn't occur if your ship is not moving in deep space. If your ship is inside a gas giant, nebula or within a solar corona for example, the flashing stops. Since I don't use Vista of Win 7 yet, I cannot confirm that, but that's the info I've been getting.

Even if you might not be able to play the missions, Quick Battle can be configured to include such terrain, so at least you can enjoy customised battles... that is if the above is true.

I'm glad to find I'm not the only one having the white flashes in Vista! It means that at least there could be a fix for it! If someone who programmed the original game could give a crack at it!

Really - don't the programmers care about what they made? How hard is it to make a patch for the white background flashing? I spent the past 2 years unable to play KA thanx to a modern motherboard and processor, (indeed making the game a stuttering crawl) and now on a new win7 laptop its going to be mostly unplayable in terms of missions?

There has to be an answer. Does anyone with programming skills know who made the original game and where they might be found now? Because KA blows all the other Star Trek starship combat sims out of the water. I can't believe they haven't remade it.
