Klingon Academy stutters with Geforce 7300

The funny thing is that PORTAL from "the orange box' ALSO stutters in exactly the same way - whenever I face a portal! -especially if I'm halfway thru and can see myself.

For KA, it happens anytime I face a 3D model - of any ship, base or whatever!
But when facing space, even with planets, etc only: it runs perfectly smooth.
It does this no matter my settings ( I brought them all down to zero)
massive lag and crackling in the earphones.

I tried disabling background applications too.

I don't get this trouble on other 3D games at all. New, old, they all run smooth.
Please help, as I am currently reduced to playing Starfleet Academy, and I just can't take Rutherot's Venturi Fetish any more.
(by the way, audio messages cut off about halfway thru on SFA - otherwise it's OK)

Do you have a widescreen monitor? If you do, that is the problem.
Otherwise, it's a problem with your .dll files and there has never been a patch made for that.

No I don't have a widescreen monitor and yes, I lowered all accelerators - no dice! It's the exact same trouble with hi or low detail models, starfield, lighting, sound, etc....Dammit!

It's only on these two games!
I don't get stutter on Half Life 2 , nor do I have any stutter at all on the amazing Left 4 Dead either!

WHO could be skilled enough to patch the .dll ???

I don't know. By now I'd figure the modding community would come out with something but they haven't. KA modding has gone the way of the dinosaur now, which is why I wish someone would revamp it. I am not a coder by any use of the word, I wish I were. If it helps, Bridge Commander can be modded heavily and has some real similarities to Klingon Academy.

As someone who stutters I find this offensive, are you saying the game isn't as enjoyable because some of the characters have speech impediments?

I'm probably going to hell for this... but lol. It would've been a very different game if that was the case.

I've also got the problem, using a Geforce 7600GS, 2GB RAM. It's currently averaging about a frame a month. I think I'm probably just going to hunt down my old Win98 CD and fire up Microsoft Virtual PC and see what happens.

It's odd that KA does this but Starfleet Academy doesn't... Aren't they built around similar engines? Could it be a DirectX issue maybe? If anything, I'd have thought it was SA that couldn't cope with higher specs.

If it still doesn't work, I'll be upset, but there's still Bridge Commander for all my ship keploding needs...

Yep. They're built around similar engines. It's not the higher specs, it's the .dlls for DirectDraw so yes, DirectX could be the issue. I ran this game on a 2.8Ghz P4 and it ran great for WinXP with DX 9.0.

How about win95 or 98 compatability mode?

Could also try running install in compatability mode.

More likely a driver situo. Try web searching the problem also.

There really isn't much of an answer - I hear now that anyone with modern drivers and cards gets this stutter. It's still unplayable with a new card. Win 7 on a laptop has the background flashing white. *sigh*

SOMEBODY CALL BILL SHATNER TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED!
