Kirk's Reddish Monster Statue

UnknownSample

Commodore
Commodore
It sits there behind his desk, in his quarters. It might be the most frequently seen, totally unexplained object in our lives. The crazy thing just sits there, never referred to, never breaking during any of those battles... What the hell do you think it is? It seems ceramic, like some Mayan artifact or something.

I may be starting some pointless obsession with knick knacks in the characters' rooms... now that big flat screens and Remastered make us feel like we're standing in the room with them...

I think I just found out its type is "Zapotec" (?) rather than Aztec or Maya, which may be a separate tribe. In what other shows has it appeared?

Can't say I've noticed it I'm sad and embarrassed to say! Have you got a pic or something, please?

I like to think it's a souvenir from Capella IV, even though it appeared prior to "Friday's Child". Maybe a gift from McCoy during his earlier time there.

It looks like a Buddha but it isn't one.

I agree it looks like (or is meant to look like) a pre-Columbian artifact from S. America.

In such a small space as The Captain's quarters, where does one keep one's DVD's? And no I don't want to know about downloads or the like! Under the bed?

They used those little rectangular data cartridges instead. Not so much DVDs, more like the MiniDisc audio format that Sony put out as a more compact alternative to CDs in the '90s. My father was generally an early adopter of new audio technologies, and I remember being amused at how much his MiniDisc player and its discs reminded me of a TOS tricorder and data tapes.

In the computer mainframe. The cartridges are only used for secure back-ups, or eyes-only info.
Retcon, obviously.

Incredibly technologically advanced Kleenex.

The "Parthenon" thing (I've always thought it looks more like Washington, DC's Kennedy Center) is just a jewelry box-type container. Kirk flips open the lid looking for the phaser on overload hidden in his quarters in "The Conscience of the King:"
