Kirk went from: Fencing! (ewww) to: Fencing! (yes)

On the other hand, Sulu was terrible at using his katana. Swinging it around at full force like it was some kind of sharpened club. That was some bad swordsmanship. Fun to watch, sure, but really useless in real combat.

Especially bad swordsmanship for a fencer. What, was he trained to use the bladeless length of his sword to give people really nasty welts? :vulcan:

In the novelization, it has them unable to get at their phasers quickly, because their gear was inside and protected by the burn suit.

By the time Kirk gets his out, the fight is well underway; don't know about Sulu's phaser, but he was pretty busy right away, too.

(I'd guess Sulu [lost his phaser], as well, or he lost it when he went over the edge after his parachute was shot up).

And there you put your finger on the logical weakness of the scene.

Well, it could've been some kind of bizarre RPG inventory-limit. Everybody only gets to bring one thing. Kirk picked his gun, Sulu his sword, and Olsen brought some charges.

YEAH... I was expecting light sabers also.... but one thing though... you have to admit.... whenever sulu say's he fences...
kirk is going to be thinking of that blade jutting thru that romulans chest...

To be fair, realistic swordfighting is not as exciting to general audiences as choreographed movie swordfighting.

I know a guy who calls himself a "fencer" but actually practices both western fencing and kenjutsu (and another form whose name I can't recall.)

Not that it was particularly realistic kenjutsu, either. But it was a slashing weapon, after all.
