Kirk went from: Fencing! (ewww) to: Fencing! (yes)

Lt. Trull

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
when kirk ask sulu what his combat ability was. His opinion of fencing when from a extremely low to quite the opposite when that blade when thru that soldier on the platform. I think that sulu should be seen practicing with a bat'leth in the next movie.

They brought guns and bombs. The bombs were in Olsen's pack, and were incinerated by the drill-beam, and Kirk dropped his phaser off the edge (I'd guess Sulu did, as well, or he lost it when he went over the edge after his parachute was shot up). Sulu had his backup close-range weapon, probably because Pike had noticed the drill platform was smaller than some american SUVs and had instructed them to prepare for hand-to-hand combat since there wasn't enough room for a proper shootout.

Well Olsen had the charges!

And Kirk's phaser was knocked over the edge. Don't know if Sulu was packing anything else.

Didn't remember the phaser but did remember Pike asking who had advanced hand-to-hand combat training and thought they went down unarmed which was a bit of a headscratcher.

Also, thought it was odd that they wouldn't all carry some charges given the perilous nature of their descent.

I just found it odd that they specifically identify him as a fencer, rather than a swordfighter, then don't give him any kind of fencing sword.

because a needle shaped sword would of been even more comical to bring than a katana.

Katanas, yuck :(

he should have whipped out a 15th century longsword. Now THAT would be bad-ass :p

apparently all romulan miners carry a shovel like stick that extends into a battle axe.

Now that is a bad ass weapon for a grave digger.

Sulu fencing with his shirt on is a serious violation of canon. He so totally should have been shirtless, which I suggested several months back here.

On the other hand, Sulu was terrible at using his katana. Swinging it around at full force like it was some kind of sharpened club. That was some bad swordsmanship. Fun to watch, sure, but really useless in real combat.
