Kirk As Spock; Spock As Kirk???

KirksStuntMan

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
A hypothetical situation: In the 1960's when GR searched for the right actors for TOS, how do you think the series would have functioned if Shatner was cast as Spock and Nimoy was Kirk?

I can't see that somehow - Nimoy as the Captain, maybe but not Shatner as an unemotional alien.

That's what I thought. IMO, Nimoy could be in command of a starship, but I don't think Shatner could contain his acting abilities/strong emotions enought to be a reserved Vulcan.

I read a De Kelley interview years ago where he claimed that he was originally considered for the role of Spock.

IMO Shatner could have easily portrayed Spock. Nimoy could not have been the Captain, he doesn't have the right look to be a leading man in a 1960's TV show. Ditto for Kelley hence why they were both cast as supporting characters.

That's a good point. I didn't consider their differing physical appearances. I was just thinking about each of their unique acting abilities.

The Vulcan as the Captain, with the Human in the First Officer's role would have been interesting. But would a 1960's audience have accepted the "alien" in command of the otherwise Human crew?

The network big shots at NBC weren't thrilled to have an alien on board the Enterprise, that is until viewing audiences went wild over Spock. Then the suits at NBC wanted to see more emphasis on Spock. Remember the infamous NBC publicity photos of Spock with his Vulcan eyebrows and ears airbrushed out?

Yes Mr. Shatner can play Spock, since he could be emotionless and cold if he wanted to. I have seen him play some characters like that in his earlier days. However... to have a captain totally expressionless and speaking in monotone for 2 hours let alone 79 episodes probably would have bored me to death. So thank god that did not happen.

I picture Shatner playing Spock like in The Cage.

Well, had Mr. Shatner played Spock in a cool collected fashion, Mr. Nimoy would have been shouting out all his words as "the captain" . Mr. Nimoy said he did so because at first he had no idea how to play Spock and Hunter in The Cage as Captain Pike was very much reserved and aloof so he felt he had to compensate that with some more dramatic acting. He continued to shout in the next few episodes until he realized he should be playing cool opposite to Mr. Shatner who was all energetic, warm, and simply fun to watch. :)

I honestly think the series would have died. Those two were perfect for their roles and the relationship of the triad was perfect. They caught lightning in a bottle and messing with that setup just wouldn't have worked, in my opinion.

Yes, I cringe every time I watch one of the early episodes with Spock and he shouts to the Captain, who is sitting 10 feet away.:scream:

I also chuckle when Spock touches the "singing" plants on Talos IV and then he grins from ear to ear.

It's creepy when Spock smiles.

As for the question at hand, I just have a hard time picturing the reverse. Nimoy as Kirk, Shatner as Spock, just seems so odd. I can almost picture Shatner as McCoy and vice versa although I think De Kelley's Kirk would be less of a poon hound.

Okay, suppose that Shatner had left the series after Season One or Two. Could they have gotten by with promoting Spock to captain and bringing on a new Science Officer for Nimoy to play against?
