Kirk and Spock Friendship

How deep was the Friendship between kirk and Spock? I look forward to some replies.

They were the closest person in one another's lives. Spock felt estranged from Sarek for most of his life, never saw Michael Burnham again after 2257 and was reunited with Sybok only for it to end in tragedy. James Kirk was one of the few people to remain in his life and as somebody with which he could easily communicate and remained so to Spock even after Kirk was believed killed near the end of the 23rd century.

They were like brothers.

Amanda was probably the closest person in his life before he was posted to the Enterprise but even they had differences due to Spock being half-Vulcan and trying to please his father. You can sense from their first interactions in TOS that they love one another but Amanda is just regularly flabbergasted by her son's human half not showing itself more often.

The brother relationship was not developed during WNMHGB, Kirk's best friend on the ship was Gary Mitchell at that time. By the first episode of series (using production order), when facing destruction in The Corbomite Maneuver, Spock slips and calls Kirk "Jim" only once for the first time, hinting at a closer friendship with Kirk than simple the Captain-First Office relationship. During the same episode, McCoy calls Kirk "Jim" continuously throughout the episode implying that McCoy is Kirk's best friend on the ship, or maybe visa-versa in McCoy's mind. Kirk doesn't call McCoy by his nickname "Bones" until The Enemy Within suggesting that the friendship with McCoy has advanced more in Kirk's mind. In all events, I don't see evidence of a "brother" relationship between Kirk and Spock, yet.

The "brother" aspect developed more in the 2nd season and I think in response to Asimov's suggestion that Kirk and Spock grow closer so the audience sees them as a team to make Shatner feel better that everyone was Grokking Spock. There were seeds of it planted late in the first season as Spock's importance grew, but it really was stressed in year two. In airdate order, Amok Time made it plain right out the gate that Kirk was his closest friend (with McCoy close behind).

I wonder if SNW will finally, after all these years, feature the "prime" version of Kirk and Spock's first meeting. I'd love to see how that went down.

As much as I loathe the thought of Kirk turning up in SNW...if it has to happen at all, let this be it.
