Kira's undershirt

kitsune

Captain
I always liked this undershirt (or maybe it's a blouse) Kira wore in Emissary:

Did any other episodes show her wearing this?

Wow kitsune, this may be the first major disagreement we have! I can't stand that shirt! She actually wore it constantly in other episodes - it was her standard 'casual wear' when she was out of uniform and it annoyed the hell out me, both because I thought it was an ugly design, and I hated the fact that it was the only thing she ever wore other than a uniform. I figured even in the 24th century women would still have fairly extensive wardrobes. I guess Kira was just too much of a workaholic to think about fashion. :p

^ I didn't realize the shirt was a part of her was casual wear. I always thought the shirt was a part of her uniform. :o

Actually, I think it *is* part of her uniform - certainly, I don't remember her ever wearing it without the uniform trousers.

It does, indeed, stick around though - it's the only part of her uniform that stayed constant.

Until she started wearing a starfleet uniform in season 7!

I cant' remember, did anyone else wear that weird shirt under his/her uniform? Was it a Kira thing, or a standard part of the Bajoran Militia uniform?

Gosh. You know, Too Much, that sort of thing was in style just a couple of years ago right now here on our very own planet. You really think it's that bad? It looks...well, kind of ordinary to me. Maybe that's what you don't like about it?

I'm a fan of the undershirt, too. It's more practical and comfortable-looking than those Starfleet mock-turtlenecks.

I would guess that Kira's undershirt is a standard part of the Bajoran Militia uniform, since we saw her wearing it whenever she took off her uniform jacket. However, I don't recall any other Bajoran officer removing the uniform jacket, so there's no basis for comparison.

Well, it's not as if Kira wore a standard uniform for long - even during S1, there were changes to the jacket that took her away from the standard, and by S4 her costume bore no resemblance to the other pink/red Bajoran uniforms. We can't say.

Let's be logical, people. I'm not even talking about whether it's attractive or not right now...how could a shirt like that possibly be part of a uniform? There's no way. A uniform is mainly designed to be functional and easy to replicate so it can be worn by many. That shirt clearly has some kind of rather intricate design to it (in the intersecting lines) that is included to make it attractive and allow the wearer to look unique. I'm quite certain it's casual wear, given to Kira to make her look 'cool', but as I said, in my eyes it did the opposite and made her look lame. I don't find it looks ordinary. If it were just a white shirt without all those weird intersecting lines, then it would look ordinary. I think I also didn't like it because it looked so awkward being worn above her red pants. I'm usually not that picky about fashion, but this really was a total eyesore to me.

Too Much, I'm almost 100% certain that it is part of her uniform. As others have said, she wears it whenever she takes off her uniform top. First season's Progress comes to mind as a good example. And I don't see why 24th century military clothing can't look stylish. They very likely use the replicator to produce their uniforms anyway, so I doubt that it really matters how complicated a design is.

Personally, I really liked the design of that undershirt. Somehow it really looks Bajoran to me. I guess it's the natural color (which seems to be some kind of beige) and the pattern.

Fair enough, but the argument could also be made that she just wears her casual attire under heruniform. Like, for example, some people might wear a dress shirt and tie at work, then when they get home they take it off and they've got a tanktop or T-shirt underneath that they like to lounge around in.

I always assumed it was the equivalent of a Bajoran bra.

And yes, I found it sexy hot when she had to strip out of her jacket and do something sweaty in that thing.

I hate that thing. It looks terribly awkward to me, for some reason, and it always bothers me when she has it on.

I think it sucks, too! What's with the weird criss-cross holes? Doesn't seem like part of a uniform to me. I would have also liked to see Kira wear civvies a little more often. -- RR

I believe you guys are overthinking it just a smidgeon. ;) It was simply supposed to indicate, "Alien-style undershirt or T-shirt." That's it. They could have made it out of one of those weird, shinyTrek-style fabrics, but to be fair, that wouldn't have meshed very well with the hard-scrabble Bajoran lifestyle and it wouldn't have looked like either an undershirt or casual wear (whatever it's supposed to be).

So instead, they just decided to give it a slightly odd design. I don't think it's great, but it's just an undershirt after all (and at least the color suits Visitor). How else were they supposed to make it alien-looking? Put a photo of ET across the chest?

I thought it looked fine for what it was, a functional t-shirt/bra kinda thing. Kira doesn't strike me as the kind of woman to put tons of thought into her clothing, I think she just goes for casual comfortable clothing.
