Meh, it happens. Not every fighter can adapt to the styles and strengths of another that easily. Besides, over the series Kira added quite a few notches to Win column, so it's all good.

Kira does defeat a Klingon later in the episode, and she defeated Klingons later too.

Exactly. Its a pet peeve of mine when people compare two aliens fighting on the show to two human females.

That fight was awespome! Mareel was attacked by Kira, and kira had twpo hits that were totally ineffective, then Mareel counters with five hits, knocking Kira out before she even hit the ground!
Classic.
And mareel rubs it in in the enxt scene. "Are you ok? I don't want to hurt you."

It's definitely written that way in the script, specifically:

"...and to Kira's surprise and ours, Mareel cleans her clock."

Basically, Kira suffers from The Worf Effect in this episode, but since it never became a habit on the part of the writers (as opposed to Worf on TNG), this ends up landing squarely in the "who cares?" column for me personally. Kira is certainly a good fighter, but not some Goku-level martial arts master who should never lose a fight.
