I didn’t even know William H Macy was in the movie

I didn't know he was in it either, however, that might explain who that bearded person was standing next to Mae in the Japanese trailer that I caught a brief glimpse of.
 
Not a surprise. I'll be avoiding everything until I watch the film.

...problem is I don't know when I'll be able to, especially since I don't think my girlfriend will have any interest in it.

Director Wes Ball revealed in a recent interview with Ape Nation (link is to IGN article) that he's working on a special feature in the physical home media release that will allow you to watch the entire movie in it's raw form, without any of the VFX.
OK that sounds pretty cool, and could make it worth getting the Blu-Ray just to see it.
 
io9 has posted a review which spoils the ending and all I'll say is that Mae/Nova is and isn't who we think she is, but she does tie into the original series.
 
Looks like we'll be seeing this on Monday. Since money has been tight we haven't been going to theater for a while, so this will be the first movie I've gotten to see in theaters since The Marvels.
