Description:
Syfy said:
It's up to Johnny and Dutch to rescue a kidnapped D'avin, but that's just the start of a larger adventure that sees our team taking on old enemies, the seeming omnipotence of the tyrannical Company and the mysterious agenda of Khylen, Dutch's former mentor.
Cast:
Hannah Jon-Kaymen as Dutch
Luke McFarlane as D'Avin
Aaron Ashmore as John Jacobis
Sarah Power as Pawter Simms
Sarah Power is not included on their cast page for Season 1 so it looks like she's been upgraded to a regular this season.

I really enjoyed the first season, and if the first four minutes are anything to go by Season 2 is going to be even better. I can't wait!

Those new opening credits are almost as bad as the narrative opening they gave Grimm in season two. Very amateur looking.

Yeah, I'm excited about a new season but I really don't like those new credits compared to the S1 version. :p It might just prove to be a small nitpick, but one shouldn't add potential fixes if nothing's broken.

Good premieres for Dark Matter and Killjoys. I liked the girl with the special arm and I hope she comes back.

Wow, really impressive premiere. They pulled out all the stops with the FX and location budgets this week, though I expect it to be above pattern for the season. D'Avin got out a little too easily, but otherwise it was a pretty intense and effective story, and I'm intrigued by where things are going. And man, Dutch looked really fine in that long silvery wig.

I liked the girl with the special arm and I hope she comes back.

That was Stephanie Leonidas from Mirrormask and Defiance. I'd definitely like to see her again.

I think Darkmatter actually had the better season opener. Killjoys looks like it took a step back in production quality.

I find it interesting that this episode used the terms "mod" and "modding" in the same way I used them in my novel Only Superhuman, as slang for bodily enhancements like cyborg components or genetic alterations. It's probably a coincidence, but it makes me feel more connected to the show.

And I love the way Michelle Lovretta's feminism plays out allegorically in Leonidas's character. Clara was victimized, possessed, and robbed of personhood and bodily control, but she owns who she is now and takes pride in her body as long as it's an expression of her own choices and self-definition, and she thereby reclaims power. It's understated, but the themes are recognizable if you look for them. And it's not unlike Dutch's psychology regarding what Khlyen did to her mentally, which was a parallel they played up overtly.

Well, we gave up on Killjoys after 15 minutes of digital breakup, picture freezing, blank screen, audio stuttering and other transmission problems. I recorded the 11PM show to watch some evening next week. I don't know if it was SyFy's transmission, Cablevision's feed, or the thunder storm, but it was sure a frustrating way to try to watch a season premiere. It was all better by the time Dark Matter came on, so we got to see that without wanting to throw food at the TV .

Great premiere. We got some nice movement on the main arc, and some more hints that Khylen isn't the big bad after all.
So is anyone else thinking Dutch is a clone and that was the woman she is cloned from that D'Avin saw in the memory?
I loved Stephanie Leonidas in Defiance and she was great here too. I was disappointed she left, but I'm glad they at least left things open for her return.
I loved seeing Pree get in on the action, and we even got a bit of back story with his whole former life as a criminal.
The new credits are a little strange.

Well, he's said all along that he was preparing Dutch for something that was coming. But that doesn't mean he isn't villainous in his methods. What he did to her was awful, whatever his reasons.

That was my first thought.

I'm also curious about why D'Avin was able to reject the Level 6 goo.

Yup, really hoping she's a recurring character, disappointed she isn't a new regular.

The new credits are a little strange.

But a lot less annoying than the old credits. I could never for the life of me decipher those lyrics. I just looked them up, and I still don't entirely get some of the word choices. But I don't think the song would work anymore. It seems to be basically asserting the Killjoys' mission statement of neutrality -- "I don't care which side that you're fighting." But it seems to me that Dutch has chosen a side now, at least in the conflict between Qresh and Westerley. Maybe she's not formally with the resistance, but she's sided with her friends in Old Town, including Alvis. As she said here, the team's new mission is not just to hunt down a warrant, but to rescue their friends.

Oh, he's definitely still a bad guy, who did horrible things, but now it just looks like there might be something worse out there.
Didn't the guys who had him at the end say something about The Lady, or something like that, could she be the original Dutch?

I would've liked a "Previously on KILLJOYS" to refresh my memory, but I managed to re-orient myself quickly enough. "Who is that new guy again? Oh, right, the bar owner from last season, his place got blown up or something . . .."

Good episode, and I certainly hope we'll be seeing Clara (and Alice) again.

As for the credits, I vastly preferred the first season, which had a lot more style and attitude. But that's not going to stop me from sticking around . . ..

I binge-rewatched the first season a couple of weeks ago. I got through all 10 episodes in a single day. (It took me a day and a half to binge-rewatch Dark Matter's 13-episode first season.)

I guess I'm the only one who prefers the new titles. I like the pop-art/comic-booky imagery, and while I'm not in love with the new theme, it's more tolerable than the old one.

^ Hmm. I wonder if they didn't bother with a "Previously on" because they assumed everyone streams or binge-watches these days? Still, last season was long ago enough that I would have appreciated a refresher that didn't take 10 hours or so! :)

And I gotta disagree with you on the song. I miss the old song, which I really thought conveyed the attitude of the show and set the right mood . . ..

I can't remember whether those nan-nites where removed from him and Dutch last season or simply!y deactivated? The ones that were used to inflict bodily harm then heal. That's what I was thinking of, as to why the goo didn't affect him permanently.
Sad we appear to have lost Fancy... Perhaps he can later be saved, but I hate that he seems to be Khylen's brainwashed henchmen. Of the many reoccurring characters presented last season, he was by far the best.

In case you were wondering about the hyphenated nan-nites, this stupid Android tablet keyboard won't let me type the word n a nnite instead, it keeps replacing it with other words. :D Baby even replaced it after trying to type it. Weird.

More like 7 hours -- c. 42 minutes times 10. So basically about as long as a typical movie trilogy. Actually I first started watching them On Demand, which wouldn't let me fast-forward through commercials so that it did take an hour per episode, but then it occurred to me to watch them on Syfy's site, which was commercial-free. (As for Dark Matter, that's on Netflix, which is also commercial-free. So that was a bit over 9 hours in all -- so maybe about as long as a Peter Jackson trilogy.)

I thought of that too, but according to the recap, they went through decontamination afterward to purge the nanites. I suppose the decon process could've been ineffective, though.

I don't know if they're really brainwashed, at least not in the sense of being mindless drones. They seem to retain individual personalities. And who knows? As a Killjoy, Fancy felt he was obliged to be the "designated asshole," the one guy in the organization who stood apart and did what nobody else wanted to do. Imagine if he applies the same philosophy to being part of Level 6. He could still be an interestingly ambiguous figure.

Well, it should be "nanite" anyway. And can't you just make the substitution optional? I have an Android phone, and it just suggests words rather than forcibly changing them. I can't figure out where to find the settings for that, though.

LOL..I tried both, and each time I looked at what I was typing they were both replaced. Perhaps the keyboard is possessed....
Nnite
Nan-nites
Nnite
Naaaanite
OK, it'll do that with 4 a's, but it won't let me type just one.
Nnite... :D nnite! Nnite? Nan-nites!
:wtf:
