Khan's Books and other KHAN questions/puzzles

Oh, neat, they actually included Paradise Lost on the shelf (two editions, in fact). Nice subtle callback to the end of "Space Seed."

^^Well, I doubt that Khan and his people actually had all those big heavy tomes with them on the Botany Bay, due to weight limitations. Their library would've had to be electronic (or on microfilm, going by the retro-future technology of TOS). So those volumes on the shelves in TWOK must've been facsimile editions created by the Enterprise's synthesizers. Perhaps the works of "the giants" like Robbins and Susann were mostly lost in the wars that tore the early 21st century, and they're remembered mainly at second hand, with only fragments surviving. ;)

Seriously, I doubt Khan had any weight issues in mind on his mission of desperate flight. If the carrying of a few valuable antiques had appeared problematic, he could always have dumped the corresponding weight in devout followers!

In general, I'd think Khan didn't have time to optimize his vessel the way a space agency today would. More probably, he just grabbed a ship and hastily sailed out, after perhaps first having installed his cryosleep gear, perhaps merely having filled the tanks of preexisting interplanetary cryochambers and hoped for the best. In addition to his followers, he would have brought aboard whatever he thought he needed for settling a new world - or perhaps whatever he thought he needed for reconquering Earth on his planned triumphant return.

What do you think, was he really out to settle - or to loop back and try again?
