Kevin Smith "2 Fat 2 Fly" Southwest Airlines

LOL WTF? America is too large to have transport that gets you to places quicker?

Happy reading!
http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=111140

I am a US citizen who abhors the ignorance that is rampant in this country toward rail systems. I cannot wait for the day I can expatriate.
Where to?

I have a thread in the Misc forum about it. I have a few places on my radar right now, but nothing nailed down as of yet.

If you have the time---and that's a big if---rail travel can certainly be more pleasant than plane travel. At the very least, it's quieter and usually a bit more social.

Again Kevin didn't really decide to torch SWA until the large woman sat beside him when he was on the second plane after the incident with him occurred on the first plane. Really this seems to be an issue of how we treat other people with weight issues not about why a film director chooses to fly a cheaper air flight or helping to promote a movie that is coming out. SWA chose to handle this situation the way the did and it's blown up in their faces and yes also helped to put Kevin in the spotlight.

Going by his twitter rants, he probably caused a scene on the plane and was asked to be removed for that reason.

He was asked to vacate the plane for no apparent reason. And when he did leave, he left peacefully. Smith is usually someone who doesn't cause a scene and tries to be polite. He only went apeshit on Twitter when he was forcibly removed from the airline because he was deemed a "safety risk".
Sorry, I don't see anyone who's waited on stand by for a seat, then told to vacate the plane without questioning why without some type of disagreement/arguement. Especially when the person asking to leave hasn't done anything wrong, that they know of. Nobody but nobody would give up a paid seat anywhere without wanting a good reason as to why. Even Rosa Parks said "No".

Kevin Smith left because the stewardess told him to leave and because he didn't want to make a scene. Heck, even the representative from Southwest Airlines even admitted to Smith in a phone conversation that they were wrong to force him to vacate the plane.

Kevin also decided to vacate his seat because as he said to Jen on SMODCAST when she brought it up if he'd made any kind of scene inside of the plane he would have most likely been arrested and escorted off the plane. You guys who are skeptical over Kevin should really listen to Smodcast because he does a good job of explaining what happened.

I don't know, it just seems like an odd string of events.
Not that it's impossible but....

SWA, the airline with the least amount of recorded complaints compared to any other airline gets it's biggest and most public complaint from a director that's been hush-hush in the public spotlight recently, that just happens to have a new film coming out.

I'm sure Kevin will put a good spin on it.
I don't know, it still sounds fishy too me.

The thing is though that he and Jen always take SWA and have never had any problems with them in the past until that incident the other day.

I can see why, considering there's news reports out there because people tried to use the wrong bathroom or whatever, and got arrested...yeah, it's easy to be arrested on a plane. Pretty much all you have to do is piss off one of the flight attendants.

Another point is it's not just time actual flight time you have to consider when flying - it's getting the to airport hours early to get through security, the fact that airports are often on the outskirts so you could have a long drive to get there. When you factor that in, air travel's not so quick.

Oh and then there's waiting for connecting flights.

All depending on the distance, obviously, clearly flying from Maine to Florida or something of that distance, will be faster even with those waits, then say...driving. On the whole though, your likely right for certain distances, Maine to New York or someplace close like that is likely easier to drive it then to fly it, again distance to time (Having once flown from Maine to Massacusetts, we were in the air probably ten or twenty minutes, but the wait time was longer then that).

As for the topic at hand, whether or not he's fat wasn't what he had an issue with from what I see. It was the fact it wasn't until after he was seated, buckled with the armrest down that someone was like "Yeah, no. Get off." Under those circumstances, I'd be angry to, especially as someone else said, on a full plane like that, it's humiliating.

In my case, I actually live closer to Washington Dulles airport than to Union Station DC. The security issue is certainly a good point (they say get there two hours early, but if you know the airport well you can usually trim that to a more appropriate value). You *should* get to the train station a bit early as well, of course, but you can shave it a bit finer.

As for connections, I'd actually bring that down on the side of planes. While a single train will go more places, *if* you actually have to change trains, it can be a lot harder to find a connection which is reasonable. Many times I've investigated trains as a means to get somewhere only to find it would require an 18-hour layover.

(Having once flown from Maine to Massacusetts, we were in the air probably ten or twenty minutes, but the wait time was longer then that).

When you're going a distance that short, then the key is to see if you can find a small airline with small planes operating out of a small airport. Cape Air is a great one in the northeast. Small airports----meaning 1 or 2 gates, maximum----are great because you can arrive only 15-20 minutes before your flight and be fine. Small planes are fun to ride in, particularly the Cessna 402s that Cape Air uses. The actual flight will be a bit longer than the equivalent route would take in a jet, but the experience will be more memorable. (Just bring earplugs. 402s are loud.)

I don't get all the hate for rail systems, New Mexico has the Rail Runner which is extremely popular, and it has been running efficiently for a good long time now *but we will see what happens if they expand the line down to Clovis or something further away*

I don't get all the hate for rail systems...

Because, again, when most people go on vacation they don't have the better part of the week to get where they want to be. If you're going a relatively "short" distance, or staying in the same general geographical location they're great and relaxing. But if you're traveling half way across the country they can be a hinderance to vacation plans as spending several days traveling across the nothing-filled plains of Kansas can be torturous.

It's not so much "hate" as it is trains can't get you there fast enough. And there's nothing wrong with flying to your destination. Yes, flying has gotten to be more of a pain-in-the-ass over the last nine years and then there's cases like this of the airline breaking their own rules and acting like a dick. Nut you can't tell me train-travelingis all sunshine and roses either. I'm sure they've their problems too. They're just not as publicized.
