Considering Picard retconned the supernova to be Romulus' own sun, it's extra good that they didn't call it "the Hobus timeline"

So why did Ambassador Spock refer to it as “a star”? He shoud’ve figured that everyone knew about the star system of Romulus and Remus. Was he concealing the future to an extent while providing the essential rundown?

I see a bit more wiggle room in the reporter’s “the Romulan sun”, at least until we obtain definitive in-canon info.

Seeing as Spock Prime shares all sorts of info about the future that would be more "damaging," any suggestion that he was trying to conceal future info doesn't make sense -- any more then his limited info to protect the crew's "destiny" in Into Darkness does (hint, J. J. Abrams, destiny only exists in Star Trek to be averted). My guess is that it's just a retcon, and, honestly, it's one of the most "benign" ones we've gotten in this new era where continuity doesn't seem to matter a whole heck of a lot (looking at you Discovery-prise).

Except Kirk being captain. That's always destiny.

Makes for a less-complicated explanation than "a star in the Romulan Empire, but not the star in the home system -- it's a different one," and no requirement that the viewer be familiar with the film series.

Most people aware of Trek have at least an idea who the Romulans are, so: home star. Home system wiped out. Premise adequately established, and on with the story.
