Keller vs Beckett. More intresting "Atlantis" doctor?

Beckett. I hated, hated, hated Keller. They just threw us at her waaaay too much early on and it left a bad impression (though, I got accustomed to her by season 5). Also, her character seemed too much of a Mary Sue (even for Stargate) and I couldn't buy into her character background or the fact that she would be on the Atlantis mission in the first place.

As for the "Keller = Slut" thing...I don't necessarily buy into that, but I think the writers unintentionally did a disservice to the character by having her get into romantic entanglements with another main character in almost back-to-back episodes. Where as other characters that might have had a "relationship/hook up" episode, they were reasonably spaced apart (and were fairly rare even then).

I actually wish they had did more with the love triangle. I think it would have been intresting, seeing McKay and Ronon sort of competing against each other. I don't think this would have hurt the Keller, character unless they did something like they do with Kate on "Lost" and have her pingpong back and forth between Jack and Sawyer, depending on what mood she is in.

^ I'll grant you that. The fact that they didn't do anything with it, besides a mostly throwaway, awkward subplot a year later, contributed to the whole "Keller=slut" mentality.

She is a slut because that's all the writers did with her. The other characters had a brain and had a personality, while Keller did nothing but whore it up and act like a dumbass.

And invent a means of removing the Wraith's need to feed. Not her fault Todd tried to use it before it was finished.

Oh, and she removed the parasite from McKay's brain and helped get the Daedalus back from the Wraith.

She also fell over a leaf and needed rescuing. AGAIN.

She also acted like an annoying whiny cry-baby a dozen times and needed someone to comfort her.

etc

I still haven't seen any evidence of her "whoring it up." What? Because she had two guys interested in her at the same time?

It's not a hard concept to grasp.

She made out with one guy one week, and then showed interest in another guy (the first guy's FRIEND) the following week.

But if I personally had to list the adjectives to describe Keller, slut would probably be number 6 or 7. Behind annoying, wussy, crybaby, childish and out of her depth. In other words there are reasons why she's one of the most hated regular/recurring characters on SG

Beckett flirted with a different woman every week, and that's before the frakkin' fist jab. I don't see the problem here.

Beckett flirted with someone? Let alone "a different woman every week"? When was this?

What's a fist jab?

Okay, slight exaggeration, but it was more than two women. Cadman, Perna from "Poisoning the Well", Alison Porter in "Whispers", Novo in "Outsiders" - the list goes on and on.

See the start of "Whispers" - specifically what Sheppard and Beckett do when Major Teldy's team turns and walks away. Sluts, the pair of them.

I would say slut would be third behind annoying and unprofessional.

Being flirty is one thing... but god damn all she did was be a flirt with everyone all the time and then whine about something.

You guys get way too hung up on this stuff. I barely even noticed she was there half the time.

I hate Keller as well...

#1 reason - The McKay-Keller relationship. Ugh. Surely one of the worst on-screen relationships in recent TV history. Two actors (and characters) with *zero* chemistry.

#2 reason - character qualifications. How someone as insecure and clueless as her would be assigned to such an important post is frankly not believable. It's not like they were cut off from earth, lost their original physician, and she (as a nurse) had to step in and take over. That would have been believable. But actually being assigned to the most top secret facility ever? Yikes. She looked less sure of herself that most people straight out of medical school.

There's more... I was never a huge Beckett fan, but at least he made a reasonable physician character. (and I know quite a few of those)

I don't get all the hate here for Keller. She was never my favorite but I almost never found her deserving of such vitriol. The only time she ever really annoyed me was in that Season 4 episode where she & Teyla got stranded on that planet and she wouldn't stop whining. But beyond that, I never found her so offensive. (Granted, I haven't seen Season 5 yet.) On the plus side, Keller was sexy and her romance made for an interesting McKay subplot.

Still, Beckett is my 2nd favorite Atlantis character of all time (after McKay). "Poisoning the Well" is far more interesting than anything Keller ever did. In addition to his interactions with McKay, I also really liked his scenes with Dr. Weir in "The Return." And although Keller is the sexy one, I find that, in a totally platonic, heterosexual way, Dr. Beckett is just kinda adorable & cuddly. It makes me want a Dr. Beckett plushie.

I actually liked the ep were her and Teyla was stranded on the Athosian settlement, homeworld. It's basically the first time she was off world, and found herself in a military type of situation. People forget that, most of the people on Atlantis are civilians and scientist to boot. They were chosen to join the project, because of their brains, not because of how well they can handle themselves in battle. I mean if Stephen Hawking wanted to join the project, would you turn him down just because he would be dead meat in a conflict with the Wraith?

I'm not really hung up on anything. You raised the issue of the double standard and I was agreeing with you.

Besides, it's nice that the geek beat the action hero for a change.

However...

In the deleted scenes, McKay might have had some more competition - Captain Vega sees Keller walking by, unzips her top (!) and goes over to her to ask her out.
