I bought the first season on DVD a few years ago and also lasted four episodes, though I did watch the extras. Managed the full season in remastered form, but that 48 or 49 minute running time is a drag with most episodes.

What, you can't pay attention to a story for 50 minutes? I suppose Lawrence of Arabia is just another yawner as well.

Fine movie, as are Spartacus (3 hrs+), Ben-Hur (Heston version, 3.5 hrs +) and The Return Of The King (extended version, 4 hrs 11 mins). Conversely, many movies of less than half the length can feel overlong. Methinks you're missing the point, which is that most Star Trek season one episodes don't really justify the running time. Maybe it's that they're very earnest and melodramatic by today's standards. Of course there are several stellar episodes, though. Mileage may vary.

I'd think that for anyone who has an interest in Star Trek, they'd be curious to see the "roots" of it all. I don't blame someone for not liking some of the episodes (there are some real losers), but there are plenty of good ones, even great by today's standards.

I believe the biggest problem is that younger people will watch these without understanding the context of TOS (in several ways that includes the maturity of television in those days plus the social influences and significant budgetary constraints for what the show was trying to do back then). Doing so does the series a tremendous injustice.

I first got into Star Trek TNG in '91 when I was 11 or 12. I used to stay up late at night on Sundays when it was on. TOS would follow immediately after. It took me several tries to get through an entire episode of TOS without switching the tv off and going to bed. Not because school was early the next morning, but because "omg the fake rocks!" sort of thing. Once I started seeing eps like The Doomsday Machine though TOS quickly displaced TNG as my favorite Star Trek series. The characters are better, the plots are better. JMO though.

I don't think you're a troll and it doesn't bother me that you didn't like TOS. I could only watch a handful of DS9 episodes and found it really isn't for me. There are only a handful of DS9 episodes that I ended up liking.

I grew up watching TOS starting in 73 when I was 10. I still love the show but I can empathize how for some people the show can be very slow and looked dated.

I don't think there is a rule that says every series or movie needs to appeal to every fan. That just not realistic. A person can not like a certain movie or series and still call themselves a fan of Star Trek.

The general thought is that if someone likes one of the Star Trek series, they should be able to find a way to appreciate the one that started it all. I'm not saying that they should like it enough to watch it more than once, but at least see most or all of the episodes. If an episode doesn't seem appealing after giving it some time, fast forward through it or skip it altogether. But I think abandoning it after only seeing a few episodes is depriving yourself of a worthwhile experience. Just my take on it...

Everything was louder: louder music, louder colors, louder acting… "Larger than life" was the order of the day, but today it's "realism." Blame the 70's, they sucked the fun out of TV.

No they didn't. TV was still good then (well mostly). I blame the last ten years. Reality TV (an ironic term in itself) helped destroy television.

OK, seriously though, echoing what others have said about episode choice. If you started at the beginning, stick it out a little longer. As much as TOS is the basis for all subsequent Trek, it had its own stumbling blocks to get over at the beginning too. And admittedly, not every episode is equal - there are a fair number of stinkers in there. But those stinkers are what make you appreciate the truly great episodes.

Also, try watching them in production order. Certain elements make more sense when you can see them in continuity context of subsequent episodes.

Whatever there might have been was summed up in the opening salvo, and doesn't really need anything more to be said, it seems. Replying would appear to be pointless since our thread starter has his mind made up. I can't imagine what the point was at all. Of course we can watch the cat and mouse game of sniping over intentions and jabbing at old wounds, maybe even play a bit ourselves. That is until this hits T'Bonz's radar and she goes all Romulan on every one.
