Kate and Leopold

Well, being that it was Valentines Day, my wife made me watch some romantic movies on Sunday. Truth be told, I quite like romantic movies; romantic comedies actually.

So, via NETFLIX streaming, we watched three romantic comedies. One of them was a scifi/flavored one called Kate/Leopold. Neither of us had ever seen this movie, and, wow, it was actually pretty good. Sort of like SOMEWHERE IN TIME in reverse.

Meg Ryan's ex-boyfriend (Sabertooth from the Wolverine movie last year) finds a very interesting (and cheap way) to time travel. He arrives in 1876 New York. Hugh Jackman, an inventor from that time, follows him back and is now stuck in 2001.

Some cliche scenes come about, but handled in fresh new ways as Meg and Hugh meet, and eventually fall in love. But Hugh Jackman has to return to his time or the elevator will never be invented? huh??

Well, its whimsical and fun, and not so bad if your luvy dubby wants to watch a movie, but you're sick of Sandra Bullock!!

We watched ENCHANTED and MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND for Valentine's Day.

Trust me, ENCHANTED is better.

We have ENCHANTED too. We also watched FOUL PLAY via netflix streaming too...forgot how funny that movie was..House Sitter (the other one we watched) was funny too!!

Next weekend its back to our regular viewing schedule. I got DARK CITY in Bluray for XMAS and havent gotten around to seeing it yet...

I considered trying to convince my girlfriend that THE WOLFMAN was the perfect date night movie, but came to my senses.

(The three feet of snow outside also lobbied against a trip to the multiplex!)

Wow, just noticed that both Jackman and Liev S. were in Wolverine. Heh.

I remember reading that they removed the subplot of the boyfriend character (Liev) being a descendant of the Jackman character...because in the end Kate and Leopold get together.

I saw this one on a plane some years back. Passed the time OK, so can't have been too bad. I remember the ending being a bit odd, but working.

I caught a bit of it a while back, and I remember thinking how funny it was that the elevator disappeared, but not the elevator shaft. If you're gonna do a sci-fi twist on a romantic comedy, you have to do better than that!

I remember enjoying Kate & Leopold well enough, but it's never been one of those movies I've ever gone back to again and again, like Love Actually, About A Boy, Notting Hill, High Fidelity, etc.

Hmm, maybe Richard Curtis and Nick Hornby should have a Motion Picture Love Child...

In regards to My Super Ex-Girlfriend, I didn't expect very much when I saw it on DVD, which is probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did.

Well that and Eddiie Izzard as Barry the "Evil" Professor Bedlam.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend is guilty pleasure of ours too...

I've always liked Kate & Leopold. Meg & Hugh had good chemistry and it was fun watching Leopold's reactions to the assorted advancements he encounters in 2001.

Romantic comedies are among my favorite movies too. I am also a royalty buff so I also really enjoyed Kate &Leopold.

I saw this around the time it first came out, I thought it was pretty decent. I thought it was kind of funny, simply because when I attended a showing, for some reason it wasn't properly aligned on the screen, so the bottom of the image was cut off (could tell by the fact the credits were only half showing), and the top occasionally (for seconds at a time) showed the boom mic (or whatever it was called), but still it was a pretty good movie.

It was pretty cliche, but as cliche romantic comedies go, it was enjoyable. I liked the title characters, and that by itself goes a long way toward making a romantic movie likeable.

Much of the movie felt, to me at least, that it was reminding us men in the audience that women still appreciate it when we behave like gentlemen. You have to love the restaurant scene when Leo exposes the lies Kate's boss is using to manipulate her.

The time-travel portions of the film make no sense if you think too much about them. I suspect that is because it was primarily a romance movie with a little time-travel in it, as opposed to, say, Back to the Future, which was primarily a time-travel movie with a little romance in it.

I'll just finish by saying I love the line, "You're sucking the life out of our condiments!"

great summing up of the movie. I agree especially about the 'acting like gentlemen' part. (and women like women). Our METROMALE world is ruining that part of humanity; imo.
