Teelie, there is still some great stuff out there in the Star Wars EU. If you want something closer to the movies, the comics, especially Knights of the Old Republic, are your best bet.

The whole CW-era continuity is a mess right now, and it won't be properly fixed until after the TV show is over, if then.

I own nearly every single book that's been released, with the exception of the YJK series and a few clone wars era books. Those are the last ones I'll be reading and most of them are from the Bantam era or just after Del Rey took over. Only one or two of the more recent book publications interest me at this point but I've lost the expectation or hope they'll be like the older works.
