Karen Gillan to play Matt Smith's Doctor's Assistant

have any of the previous Doctors, ever wanted to be ginger, or was that just Ten?
It's an indication that the Doctor hasn't been Merlin yet. Per "Battlefield," the Merlin Doctor has red hair. So, Tennant's Doctor saying in "The Christmas Invasion" that he wanted to be "ginger" means that he's not yet the Merlin incarnation. It was a sneaky, subtle continuity ref back to the old series

Where did RTD state this? Or is this just your "theory"?

It's my interpretation of the dialogue.

The Merlin Doctor has red hair, per "Battlefield." Since McGann, Eccleston, and Tennant clearly did not have red hair, it's clear that the Doctor has not yet been Merlin.

I thought Ansled and gang came from an "alternate dimension" or something? Wouldn't he be talking about an alternate Doctor? Maybe one of the "Unbound" incarnations? ;)

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I'd hit that.
Come on, I know she's a ginger but that's no reason to assault her.

I like a ginger girl, they are usually a little desperate and therefore do all kinds of "stuff" other girls won't...
oooh, "stuff" Why don't we all know that?
I guess if everyone knew that they'd be popular, and then have no reason for doing it... It's like some sort of grandfather paradox.

(And, also, an injoke at Billie Piper's ex-husband's expense.)
:guffaw:nice to see you have not been over thinking this

Okay, I have to ask: What is it with the whole Brit "Ginger" thing? Everytime I hear anyone from the UK (outside this board, as well) speak about a redhead, they not only refer to them as "ginger", but seem to place some sort of either reverence or revulsion on the term. What is it that's so special about being a redhead in the UK? You don't like the Scots? ;) No, seriously, what's the deal?

i've never understood it either. but then again i don't get insulting people because they're black either. nationalistic bollocks like 'French people are smelly, surrender and eat snails' i get. but not the other.

She seems to have the minimum qualifications necessary to be a Doctor Who companion. Hopefully she can also act and has a compelling back story for her character.

I'm guessing those qualifications are cute, and female. I didn't know there needed to be minimum qualifications to be a companion.

Pretty much.

Also, I've liked the guy companions quite a bit, except for Adam who was annoying. Jack and Mickey though, great characters.

Oh, I agree. But you have to have other things like acting talent in order to be a male companion. You can't say the same about every female companion.

I imagine it is probably related to the general tendency of redheads to be Scottish, Welsh or Irish in the past, all generally rather unpopular varieties of people in the old days.

That said now if anything it is more of a joke. There are lots of very attractive redheaded women out there, and I personally find them quite attractive, horses for courses.

The thing you always have to remember about British prejudice is that it is more of a cultural heritage than something we really feel. We might call Americans stupid, or the French cowardly, or the Germans a bunch of warmongers, but we don't MEAN it, it is just a sort of cultural thing.

Britain is one of the most culturally accepting countries in the world in many ways, but we English do like our comedy prejudices.

which probably explains Omid Djalili's popularity...

Well exactly, I love his stuff and he plays pretty heavily on British prejudices knowing we don't mean it, and we find them pretty funny ourselves.
Comedy prejudice, comedy insults, comedy in general. Anything to avoid talking about feelings and that shit...

We British are not a touchy-feely race it is true, but of course neither are Americans. The more emotional Europeans like the French and Italians balance us out nicely though.

That sense of balance and a general recognition of differences being positive of course is a fundamental principle of Doctor Who, so it is not surprising it came out of Britain.

Well she's quite the looker! I haven't been able to find much acting-wise on her to watch, save for the Soothsayer appearance in "Fires of Pompeii" but I'm really looking forward to what her and Smith have to bring to the table. I mean, if Moffat and his team said they have good chemistry together I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. :)
