Karen Gillan to make theatre debut

And brace yourselves for another round of "Karen has left the show" rumors, even though it's been made clear that the production schedule we've been used to since 2004 no longer applies. Witness, for example, the fact filming of Series 6 - with Karen and Arthur in tow - only finished a couple weeks ago, despite the fact Karen filmed a movie a couple months back and Arthur was setting up to do a run of Dr. Faustus.

There was also that quote attributed to Karen by the BBC when they reported on the end of Series 6 production that could be read either way.

Still, it's great to see Karen branching out. If I was in the neighborhood I'd go see her perform without hesitation.

As for Karen treading the boards, brilliant!

If the shooting schedule reported in the latest Private Eye is correct, then a theatre run starting in October would slot pretty neatly in between shooting of the Christmas special in September and the next season in February. Though she might be a bit busy if she's having to combine the Who shoot and theatre rehearsals in September, I suppose....

I don't think there's any indication S7 will start anywhere near as early February. Currently, it seems likely 2012 will only bring us a half season late in the year, and a CHristmas Special. There are indications that S7 will be spread between 2012 and 2013.

Cool news! About Gillan leaving though, isn't the actor who plays Rory confirmed to be leaving at the end of series six? So wouldn't that mean Amy would be written out, too? Could be interesting to keep her but chuck Rory though. Will just have to see!

No. That was assumed when it was revealed that he'd be be on stage in London until November, but that was back in the days when it was thought that Series 7 would follow the normal shooting schedule.

All that can be said at the moment is that Amy and Rory either won't be in the Xmas Special at all or will only have a cameo appearance in it.

Interesting, I imagine that would make Doctor Who history if Amy became the 11th Doctor's companion for the third season in a row. I believe she's already only the second to do two consecutives with the same lead actor ...

No, there have been plenty of two and three year companions with the same Doctor.

Three year companions include:

Frazier Hines (Jamie) was with Patrick Troughton for three years.
Katy Manning (Jo Grant) was with Jon Pertwee for three years
Lis Sladen (Sarah Jane) was with Tom Baker for three years. Well, two and a half, but I'm counting it.
Janet Fielding (Tegan) was with Peter Davison for three years.

Click here if you want a complete list of how long each companion spent with a particular Doctor.
