Karen Gillan Talks Jean Shrimpton

I think that a lot of people are relieved that Karen's leaving.

You're very much in the minority. She's the most popular companion the show has had in years. And I'll bet my first born that the next companion will be hated by some people too. Some folks just refuse to be satisfied. They should stop watching DW and watch Britain's Got Talent instead.

You saying that I refuse to be satisfied? Far from it. I just think that Amy is the ultimate Mary Sue and needs to leave. We had great companions in Rose and Donna, and Rory is not so bad.

In what way is she the most popular companion the show has had for years? I don't disagree she's popular but I don't see how she's so much more popular than Donna or Rose?

I didn't realise being a fan meant you had to always like everything about the show. Not everyone likes Amy but she hardly gets Bonnie Langford level of abuse!! Though I must say I do prefer Mel myself!

No-one says you have to like everything about the show. Still, I'm often surprised when I go online and see some of the views expressed about any and all of the companions in nu-Who. Any fans of the show I know in real-life have liked most or all of them to date. We all prefer some to others but none of us hate any of them.

Whereas online, some people loathe Rose, despise Amy and hate Martha. There seems to be an intensity of dislike that most casual DW fans, the sort who tune in every week but wouldn't come on here to discuss it, just don't seem to be capable of.

my sister HATES Rose with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. but she loves Martha with an equal intensity and she is involved in online fandom. (principally writing fan-fic, often with Martha meeting other Doctors )

It's fine if some people don't like Amy, and they do have the right to post to that effect. Now ... that being said, her popularity isn't in dispute. The fact Karen Gillan has been allowed to appear in THREE consecutive seasons is not arbitrary and should show her staying power.

Hmm, see I think Rose was way more of a MAry Sue than Amy ever was/will be, but that might be just me :)

Rose, no more Rose, please. The show spent far too much time on how important she was to the Doctor both when she was on the show, and during the years following her 'departure'. RTD's inability to let the character go, and have her so dogging the show's run right up to when he finally left are what makes the character an insufferable Mary Sue.

That out of my system, Amy, I like her fine but I wouldn't mind a new companion. Just don't let it be river Song. As much as I enjoy Ms Kingston, River is edging towards Rose territory for Mary Sue-ness.

For Amy let's take a look: constantly reminded of how special she is, check, in that she is "The Girl Who Waited," and who recreated the universe with her memories and a prison. Awesome butt-kicking skills as the plot demands, check, see patchy-Amy and old ugly Amy. The Doctor sees something special in her for some reason that hasn't been made clear to the audience, check.

Any problems that people had with Rose they ought to have with Amy. The only difference between the two is that Karen is prettier than Billie. Oh, and she can't act as well. Her expressions are either fearful, insecure and fierce with her hands folded over her chest or flirty and making a face at Rory/The Doctor.

Being fair here, given what we know about Moffat, if anyone's his Mary Sue it's Rory :)

I'll give you pirate Amy being a tad unbeliveable, however older Amy in the Girl Who Waited had had decades of surviving to hone her skills, so the fact she was so tough made perfect sense.

And Karen can clearly act, as least as well as Billie.

The big test will be to see whether Moff can let go, that's one of the biggest indicators that Rose was RTD's MS, he couldn't let her go. She might as well have been in Series 3 because her ghost was ever present, then she came along and mucked up the end of series 4 (I did like her cameo just before Tennant's regeneration though).

I'm owed an explanation as to the nature of Karen's acting abilities. I see nothing. Tell me what I'm not seeing.

Well I thought she was quite good as Shrimpton if I'm honest, and frankly I'd have thought The Girl Who waited would have silenced a lot of critics. I thought her performance as older Amy was wonderful.

But I doubt I'm going to convince you, acting is very subjective. For example I find Freema incredibly wooden but other people think she's brilliant.

Speaking of which, when Freema Ageyman was first announced, I didn't know who she was, only that she was a black lady who had been in a previous episode in the Whoniverse, I was hoping for the Tree Lady

Nah putting acting ability to one side for a moment, Karen has way more screen presense than Freema, too often Martha just faded into the background, whether you think it's a good thing or not, Amy never ever fades into the background.
