Just watched "Encounter at Farpoint..."

to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Next Gen. Rewatching the episode(s) makes me wistful and nostalgic for the 80s. All the elements of spandex uniforms, bombastic music, beardless Riker shall always remain memorable. Despite the legions of detractors, I still remain a fan of first season TNG. There was a flavor of true exploration in the sense of the mission of the Enterprise and in the series itself that has not been reproduced in the subsequent spinoffs, IMHO. Anyone else rewatched any first season episodes recently to celebrate 20 years?

I haven't seen early episodes of TNG for a while, but I remember first seeing it, and being so wowed by the premier. I taped it on VHS and rewatched it a couple of times every day for the better part of a week. There was an ernest sincerity to early TNG, where they were trying to find their footing. They hadn't estabished most everything about the series, yet, including many of what became cliches.

TNG is the most interesting Trek series, since it shows the transition of "old" Trek, that shows the time it was produced, to the timeless Trek of the later seasons, which were the footprint for the Trek shows to come.

I recently finished revisiting Season One via DVD, and I have to say that, while I always tried to find the good in it, it becomes increasingly obvious with age that the first season's unflattering reputation is well-deserved. Still, the earliest episodes of the season evoke memories of the sense of discovery at this new Trek setting, and the general joy of having Trek back in all its glory on television. I can perfectly understand why viewers stuck with it until it got really good--What else was on that was anything like it?
