Just watched "2010"

Yes I did remember what you said. ;) But I have an up-converting DVD player right now.

That won't make much difference here. Not with DVDs as crappy as the existing versions of 2010. Remember: *they aren't anamorphic*.

It would probably make it worse to upscale it, to be honest.

And again, I know all of that but given the restrictions I have, it'd still be nice to have the film on DVD. It'd certainly be better than not having it at all. I don't feel that "2010" was the greatest thing ever set to celluloid, but for me it was enjoyable and brings back some good, good memories of the people with whom I first saw it. Things that transcend the technical qualities or lack thereof in existing media.

Bluray players should be hitting ~$200 or less by the second quarter of next year if not sooner. Hell, I work at Blockbuster and we have one that is hitting $219 tomorrow... Sony wants them on the market, the popularity is exploding and they, and their fellow manufactures, are flooding the market with them. And they are pretty much garenteed not to be replaced within the ten year window which is what most estimates put it at before things start to turn to direct download over the net, and even then, they will still be a market for bluray...

If you have an HDTV, there is no point not to upgrade. They play Blueray disks up to 1080p and they can play DVD's, so your past collection can still be played.

Do yourself a favor, upgrade.:vulcan:

I've actually been toying with upgrading for a while now, though I'm torn as to whether it's better to get an "up scaler" or a bluray as I have neither the intention or the finance to replace my entire collection (over 300 titles at last count) in a hurry. I suppose the clincher would be, if a bluray can upscale a standard DVD, otherwise there's little point.

1) The fantastic effects. Our solor system is gorgeous, particularly Jupiter, and the film really cattches the wonder of this magnificent planet. Wehn I went to Jupiter I was amazed how close the filmmmakers weere able to get.

When was this, exactly?

If the prices keep dropping, maybe I will. But with a kid in college, another entering next year and all the commensurate spiraling expenses of an ailing economy, that's kinda low on the priority list.

A Blu-Ray player does upconvert existing DVDs, so upgrading does seem to be a foregone conclusion. Like you I have a huge library of DVDs, many of which aren't coming out on Blu-ray anytime soon, if ever. What i fear most is Blu-Ray not being the standard, that something else may be coming along. I don't exactly keep up with new tech much.
