Just Started Final Fantasy X

No, that's not a typo! Number ten. I know I'm nine years late. :p I actually started playing it a couple years ago but stopped pretty quickly because I didn't understand the Sphere Grid or the equipment upgrades. Well since then I've played FF12 and in preparation for 13 coming out I finally blew the cobwebs off my PS2 to get back into it.

Turns out I had stopped at the point shortly after you recruit Yuna and her two guardians. Now I just got to the point where you play blitzball and recruit Auron and learn that Sin is your father... which confuses me since Sin is a monster creature but don't spoil it for me!

Anyway now I understand (for the most part) how the Sphere Grid works but I still don't understand the equipment. When I look at weapons, it doesn't tell me if the weapon has better stats or not, just if it comes with a new/different ability (pierce, sensor). So how am I supposed to know which piece of equipment is better?

Y'know it's really shocking but this game is nine years old and the graphics still look pretty good! It doesn't feel embarassing and antiquated like when I tried to play Ocarina of Time a few years back. My only big complaint is that there's waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much cutscenes. I'm doing more watching than playing with this game, man.

The weapons in FFX don't affect your stats, only the sphere grid can do that. All you need to look out for is what abilities a new weapon may give. Later on in the game, you get the chance to add abilities to a weapon, so long as it has an open slot.

So, you hated Ocarina Of Time because of it's graphics?? That pretty much justifies this: :scream:

It wasn't so much the graphics as the clumsy game-play and the fact that I just had played the exact same game recently in a recent Zelda game. I know Ocarina created the genre and all but every Zelda game is the exact same damn thing :p ;)

Damn this game is addictive. You do a little micro level up after almost every single fight. If you put in a summon to fight for you does that negatively effect how much experience you earn? I just wish there were more save points, I keep having to pause it when a show starts and finish it on commercials 'cause it takes so damn long to reach a save point.

Any character who has been in a battle will get Exp, bring them in, have them guard for one round, swap them out, they get full Exp.

So should I keep swapping the characters in and out so they all level up or can I just stick with my three favorites?

heh i like to go back to old games as well, especially rpgs. i went back and played ff7 and then got ff8 for the psp and am replaying that. ff8 has a ridiculous amount of cut scenes - much more than i remember. it's super annoying.

Surely the FMV scenes in FF8 aren't as tedious as those for FF7. A few of them are about half hour long!

FF7, FF8 and FFX were, and to a large extent, still are, great games.

yeah, ff7 had some ridiculously long ones, but ff8 seems to have these little short cut scenes for just about every 10 minutes of game play. it becomes very tedious. at least with ff7 you could just walk away from it until it was done ;)

So if I summon the Aeon first thing before the other two do anything and the Aeon wins the battle, will the other two characters earn experience?

if you are playing blitzball any, go back to the town with the stadium and recruit two guards, Biggs and Wedge, they are EXELLENT blitzball players

I tried playing blitzball and didn't know what the hell I was doing... I'm just gonna stick with the main game and not do the side quests, I think.

I hated the blitzball stuff, so I never played it beyond the one game I was forced to.

FFX is a good game overall, although it's more like an interactive movie than a game, since the game structure is alarmingly linear for a Final Fantasy title.

I don't understand how to use the overdrives with their little real time quick movements. Like for Lulu it says to twirl your stick in a circle... I do that like crazy and the meter doesn't budge and the attack does little damage.

FFX is my favorite of the series. It's the only one I've bothered to finish to total completion. (And have done so several times.) It's the only one where the game play is unique and involved enough to keep me interested. FFXII might otherwise be, but it's too friggen long.

Wedge is. Biggs isn't. There are much better other players to be had in and around Luca. In fact, you can assemble a pretty unbeatable team right then.

And really, Wedge is only good to about level 20-25. His offensive stats even out (and eventually go to suck) in favor of Defensive stats. However, they're the wrong defensive stats to be all that useful and each can learn any defensive Techs naturally. I've always said he's a really overrated player.

Of course, winning with the default Aurachs isn't exactly difficult.

I would advise doing so. There's a lot of stuff to be had that will make the game easier and there are a few Sphere types (REALLY useful for manipulating character growth) that can only be obtained through Blitz.

In fact, beating the Goers in require match is invaluable. You're rewarded with a +4 Strength sphere. It doesn't sound like much, but giving it to Tidus makes the next third of the game much, much easier (especially because of a few boss fights.)

Heck, it such a significant difference I'd almost advise starting over (as it seems you're not too far into the game). Plus you can get the HP Spheres from the Lord Ochu and Valfor's second Overdrive--both of which I'd guess you missed.

I don't understand how to use the overdrives with their little real time quick movements. Like for Lulu it says to twirl your stick in a circle... I do that like crazy and the meter doesn't budge and the attack does little damage.

It just takes practice. I would suggest filling up everyone's overdrive, saving the game, and then enter a battle and discharge everyone's OD. Then just reload the save. Rinse and Repeat.

Lulu's is infamously the hardest to use. I've concocted my own way of doing it. I actually place the stick in the palm of my hand and rappidly do circles with my whole arm pushing the stick to the stoppers. I can usually get nine or ten rotations.

I would recommend waiting until you get the airship to play any blitzball. That way you can recruit Brother. He's probably the single best blitzball player there is.

I'm up to the point where lightning hits you anytime you walk anywhere. I've actually been wasting a couple hours running around a save point leveling up like crazy since I didn't feel like advancing the story. So all my characters have like 1800 HP now :D

I remember without even trying I ended up turning my Yuna into a completely broken God that destroyed the final boss in two hits. That was pretty insane. When I started killing everything with no effort at all I recall thinking "Hmmm, I may be a bit overleveled."

I'm actually wondering if I went too far with the leveling on the Thunder Plains. I'm going to finally advance the story today after spending several hours over the past days level grinding. All my characters have 2000 HP now

^
With proper SG manipulation that's easily obtainable by Thunder Plains without any grinding. And, really, HP is probably the least important stat.
