Because people are smart enough to vote for them over their opponents. How else?

Since when is 39 too old for a temp secretary, especially in this economy?

Good point. Though we saw that the character was both single and living in her own home, so she must have been doing something to support herself all these years.

But then, in Hollywood's view of the world, secretaries probably make enough to own a 10,000sq ft. condo.

I would say temp positions are usually something people have when they are younger, but I know people who have been with the same temp agency for 20 years, and were either never hired elsewhere or got paid enough to not make an issue of it.
