Just read Crimson Shadow by Una McCormack

I've been a fan of Una's writing for a long time; this exceeded my high expectations. :) Garak has grown and changed so much, but is still deeply recognizable. I loved the relationship he shared with Parmak. I loved the original characters and the political intrigue -- I particularly liked the detective, Arati Mhevet, as a narrator.

The interactions between Garak and Picard were compelling.

I stayed up way too late on Friday night reading the whole thing. I've been mulling it over since -- I'm definitely going to be re-reading soon!

Good isn't it ?

Una is probably my favourite Trek author. I put off reading Never Ending Sacrifice for ages as it just didn't appeal to me. I eventually read it. It was truly wonderful.

I'll read anything she writes.

Then you might be interested in her fanfic too!

I was the same. I stupidly didn't think I had any interest in it at all. I could not have been more wrong.

Una McCormack fanfic?

Must be Christmas.

Seriously though, she's super talented and basically the GO-TO author for anything Cardassian. Really wish she and Andrew J. Robinson could have a pow-wow and possibly a collaboration.

Her Doctor Who fiction is very good as well...

Some info about her two DW novels from my interview with her in 2012:

“The first, The King’s Dragon, is a thinly-disguised retelling of Beowulf – In Space!” she laughs. “There’s some treasure, and a dragon, and some space bureaucrats. The story was inspired by the discover of the Staffordshire Hoard: the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silverwork yet found. It was discovered in a field in Staffordshire in 2009, and, like many others, I wondered who had abandoned these riches, and why, and whether they ever intended to come back and dig their treasures up again. I also liked the idea of blurring the lines between fantasy adventure and science-fiction.

“My second Doctor Who novel, The Way Through the Woods, let me play even further with writing Doctor Who as fantasy. It’s set in a small English village next to an ancient piece of woodland in which people have an alarming tendency to disappear… This is a classic fantasy story – the ancient woods that hold a secret, and in which people can get easily lost. I drew on multiple sources, such as The Wood Between the Worlds in The Magician’s Nephew, Mythago Woods by Robert Holdstock, and Rudyard Kipling’s poem The Way Through the Woods, which I’ve loved from childhood. The Fairport Convention song Reynardine was also very important to the story. The Doctor, Amy, and Rory try to prevent a disappearance, but – as ever – things get more complicated than they bargained for.”

Crimson Shadow was a great read! One of the best of last year. I've saved Never Ending Sacrifice for the end of my DS9R readthrough. Una has a follower for life over here :techman:

This is one of my favorite books of the Fall series. She has an upcoming ds9 novel coming out and her fanfiction is really good. I read her ds9 fanfiction stories first before she professionally started writing ds9 books.I've been a fan of her stories for a long time.:)

I definitely want to go on a re-reading spree and visit her other books again after I re-read The Crimson Shadow. She's one of those authors where I think it can't be as good as I remember, and then it's even better.

I think that might be the most awesome thing ever.

Great book. Btw, there's already a review thread for it on the board, including a voting feature.

However, I can't find it anymore, even with the search function. :alienblush:

For instances like this Sho's ranking list comes in handy : http://www.eikehein.com/stuff/trekbbs/review_threads/

Thank you! I thought of that as well... but couldn't find it either. Oh well, the trappings of modern technology...

Finally, the Review Thread: http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=226219

This was not only a good Trek book but just a fantastic book!
Yeah, it stands up brilliantly on it's own merits, not just as great Treklit.

I'll have to check that out. I normally void fanfic as it is often full of unsuitable crossovers and Mary Sue's, but Una's requires some investigation.

You have a real treat in store...

This is awesome. Who knew I still had some unread Una to go? Thank you!

If there's any others floating around, don't be shy about pointing 'em out! :D
