Just My Type: A Book Written Just For Timby

Comic Sans is the devil and now we have a professional agreeing with us. He even finds a way to knock the prequels

What are your favorite fonts?

My current favorite font is called "Narkism" on Windows 7. I hadn't seen it anywhere prior.

I used to be a really big fan of the font "Chicago" on my old Macintosh, but I haven't seen it used anywhere in probably 12 years.

I like how your post implies that typographers didn't have a problem with Comic Sans until now. :p

I like Garamond a lot when I need a serif font. For sans serif I like Futura, and the ol' standby that is Helvetica.

I got a reminder letter in the mail a couple of weeks ago, a card from my dentist letting me know about going in for my next cleaning. The card was written in Comic Sans.

I now need a new dentist.

;)

I think my second most hated font would have to be Times New Roman, the default font for pretty much every word processor ever. Ugh.

Most detested is Courier. Ugh. There's a reason why I use a computer with various fonts so it can look like I didn't use a 100-year-old typewriter. That's the single ugliest font, ever. However if one turns in a script or a manuscript in anything but Courier they're ostracized from the community. If it's not in some lame-ass font like Papyrus or Segoe Script it shouldn't matter.

But, I'll just type in Calibri for now and just switch it to Courier later, thanks.

:)

Avatar ruined it for everyone.

What scares me is that you know there's people out there who can read Wingdings.

My favorite fonts have long been Verdana and Lucida Sans Unicode (only with small print, preferably 10). In my younger days I was a fan of Garamond and Georgia. In more recent years I have taken a liking to Eurostyle.

Eh. It's just the default font of choice. Not worth hating or loving either way.

Are you kidding? Courier, Courier New, and Final Draft Courier are awesome. Each letter is the same width. Got a lot of mileage out of that for college term papers at times, and speaking as someone who reads a shit ton of scripts every day, it's not all that bad.

Besides, it's industry standard to use a Courier font on scripts. That's why it matters.

It strikes me as kind of silly to have an industry standard font. I mean, if courts don't have them, I don't understand why script readers need them...

Unless you're not using electronic files, in which case I sort of understand why a standardized font would be preferred, so that you can (however vaguely) estimate the length of time scenes drag on.

I like Times New Roman. It's fine. For sans serif, I also like Arial. I am not a font hipster, I guess. :p

Comic Sans in business correspondence is dreadful, though. The lettering in actual comic books doesn't even look like comics sans.

^ I think that's the idea, actually, as it keeps the rough length of a page of a script about the same.

I have no problem with Comic Sans in business memos; it's like casual Friday-- not really so casual, but not totally constipated, either.

I also like Times New Roman and Courier for stories or poems. I use Ariel generally in cartoons.

The most fun fonts are the logo fonts. My favorites are the fonts based on the EC titles, the original Fantastic Four and the one based on the story titles in the original MAD comic book (the version I have is called "Shermlock").
