A Tsunami warning was issued as a precaution late last night after a huge earthquake in Fiordland measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale was felt in the lower South Island.
GNS Science reported the 7.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 9.22pm, was centred 100km northwest of Tuatapere with a focal depth of 12km.
The United States Geological Survey website put the quake's epicentre underneath Resolution island in Dusky Sound.
It was about the same magnitude as the killer quake that devastated the Sichuan region of China in May 2008, leaving at least 68,000 people dead. It was also the same magnitude as the 1931 Napier earthquake, which caused the largest loss of life and most extensive damage of any quake in New Zealand's recorded history with 256 dead.
Neither the Manapouri Power Station nor the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter reported any damage, but further assessments would be made today.
The Southland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group activated the region's emergency operations centre to assess damage reports.
Group Controller Neil Cruickshank said a 17cm wave had been detected at Jackson Bay on the West Coast and the tsunami warning had subsequently been cancelled, he said.
Te Anau helicopter pilot Mark Deaker said he saw power lines arcing and sparks flying in the air.

I wasn't feeling well so I went to bed early. Literally 10 seconds later I thought to myself "I can feel my heartbeat" and then my heartbeat apparently got worse! It lasted about a minute and I contemplated getting my little girl up as she was in bed, but it finished before it got any worse.

The quake was centred about 300km from my location, but was a real roller.

Sounds like a real scary moment. Glad there was not a tsunami after all.
My coworker was through the big one in Thailand a few years ago. Since then I fear them very much.

That's a pretty darn big quake. Glad it turned out to be not very serious (relatively speaking).

Those quakes that hit when you're in bed always feel very odd anyway - the last time I was in one (it was when I was visiting my hometown in California), it felt like someone was shaking the bed to wake me up, only it went on and on and on!

Yikes! I sat through an earthquake a little smaller than that 8 years ago, and it was scary. Glad to hear you're okay.

I heard about that on the news today. Hope you're OK there. :)

I've not had that much quake experience myself, the most significant being last year's 5.4 in Lincolnshire which unnerved me a little. Fun, though. :bolian:

He was filming a movie in doubtful sound when the earthquake hit and he was swallowed up by the earth.

He's currently helping Will Ferrell escape the Land of the Lost........
