Just bought a DS9 Model and Need Some Advice

So, I just got the AMT DS9 model in the mail. (Got it for a pretty good price, too, only like $75 or so, and that's with shipping. Though, if I noticed another auction going on, I probably could've gotten it for like half that. But whatever. Last time I checked, there were still some of the models on eBay. One was the electronic version - I opted for the non-electronic version - for just $119, and I believe no charge for shipping.) I need some advice on the paint's. While the directions in the box instructions at like it will provide the needed color names, but except for the base and the shuttles, it does not and just says to use the box for reference. Maybe I'm missing something. Then again, the directions also have a couple spelling mistakes, so maybe it's the direction makers fault.

Anyway, for anybody who might have made this, do you have the paint names that I'll need? Oh, and do you have a glue type to recommend? This is my first model, so any help or advice are appreciated.

I would recommend Testors model cement, the orange and white tube. They also make a non-toxic version that smells like oranges, but in my experience doesn't work very well, and a "liquid" version that comes in a weird little black plastic container with a precision tip, which a lot of guys swear by, but I've never had luck using. Though be careful with this stuff as it can easily get away from you.

In fact, I would recommend that you NO NOT build your relatively expensive and tough to get DS9 kit as your first ever build. It's kind of a tough kit to fit together properly. Go out and pick up a cheap car kit or WWII airplane and build that up first. Something not too difficult that will let you get a handle on using the materials. Model cement can make a disaster of a kit if you don't know how to control it, and I'd hate to see you ruin your DS9.

As for colors, you'll need to ask yourself if you are trying to match the on-screen appearance, which is much more gray and steel looking, or the appearance of the studio model which is much more of a sandy-yellow. If I were you I'd start looking over pictures of the station and start experimenting with colors.

Another use for the test model you're going to go out and get first to build as practice, is that whatever subject it is, you can paint to test out a color scheme for the station model. Buy maybe a couple close colors of spray and try them both to see which you like best.

Honestly, to really dial it in, you'd need an airbrush and the skills to mix your own colors, but it sounds like you're just starting out and might not want to get that heavily invested in it. But that's okay, as there is a wide variety of sprays available which will get you pretty close.

Good luck!

Albertese is wise and spot on with his recommendations. I suggest you follow them. The DS9 kit is on the difficult end of the spectrum, best to practice on a few cheap models to develop your skills before diving into that one, especially with the cost involved. Good luck!
