Jurasic Park...now

After my Chargers were humiliated by the Steelers, we watched Jurasic Park CINMAX HD on my 96inch screen..and wow....what a movie this is after all these years. I haven't seen it nearly five years or so, and this movie holds up....not as good as the book, perhaps, but for a 'familiy' film that you can watch with young kids, it satisfy's on all levels...

The sequels never matched the sheer awe of seeing these special effects like this..the whole scene with the TREX attacking the kids in the car had my kids chewing fingernails...throw in the 96 inch screen, and Bose sound system, and it was like being at the movies..

Bravo to Spielberg for this great action/adventure/thriller for grown-ups of all ages...

Jurassic Park has and always will be one of my favorite films. First and foremost because dinos have always facinated me and second because it's just a damn good and well made movie.

It's still a great movie, but I have to admit it feels a little less magical to me now than it originally did. I don't know if it's the fact we've seen so many amazing digital creatures (even on TV) since then, or what...

One of my favorites, and a movie that was watched near constantly by my friends and I in High School. I think the book is a bit better, but the movie is one of the best popcorn movies ever.

I'm also always impressed by the great cast in this movie. So many great actors.

JP's dinosaurs are better than a lot of digital creatures these days, because they were done mostly with practical, full-scale animatronics, and the CG shots were animated by artists who had formerly worked with stop-motion and thus understood how to animate things with realistic mass and inertia and so forth. Too many digital animators today lack experience with how things like inertia, lighting, motion blur, and the like function in reality, because they've never worked with anything other than computers. Ultimately, any FX technology is only as good as the artists using it.

Looking back at JP today, its paleontology is somewhat dated, because current thinking is that most or all therapod dinosaurs (at least the small ones like raptors) were feathered. But I can excuse it, since it was stated in the film (and presumably the book) that the JP dinosaurs were created by mixing incomplete dinosaur DNA with modern reptilian DNA, so that the resultant creatures are only approximations of the originals. That's a very handy rationalization for any scientific errors in the portrayal of the dinosaurs. (Except for blatant inconsistencies like how the T. rex can sneak up in the climax when it had such loud, earthshaking footsteps earlier on.)

One of my favorite things about the movie is where the paleotology is actual ahead of the science. When the movie was made, there were no raptors that size (in fact the species in the film is more like 3-4 feet tall IIRC in RL). However, right before (or after) its release the Utahraptor was discovered which was 6 feet tall.

Yep..though to be honest, it is just 84 inches or so because I can't get the projector back far enough!!!

I projector is getting dated. I got it back in 2005...but it still works fine. We watched football season on it (now over, thanks to the chargers nose diving yesterday) and special movie occasions (Dark Knight and Hairspray (dont ask) recently).....works fine with my blu-ray. We connected our HDDVR to the projector and watched Jurasic Park on it. We did it last month when GENERATIONS was making the rounds on CINMX...and Generations in HD was pretty good!!! Can't wait until they all come out in HD someday..
