June Art Challenge - Ptrope

Ptrope

Agitator
Admiral
Maybe I owe BJensen an apology, but I'd be remiss in not acknowledging him as the inspiration for this piece:

Lots of references to time in this one - not my usual style, so please be as (constructively) critical as you like :bolian:

^ :wtf: Where's the "O'Mallies"? :wtf:

Actually, I'm not sure where you're going with this. Seems abstract to me, I'm just not "getting it". Then again, I don't "get" abstract art at all. Really cannot comment one way or another on this one, Ptrope. Wish I could lend some constructive critisim, but I'm going to count me self out as "not qualified".

Heck, I don't even know what there is to "get" in there. Best I can say is that the clock parts, the black hole, the oldest and newest forms of the 1701's saucer, the abstract representation of time-space being warped around the black hole - all of those are expressions of time. As for the Vulcan, well, I wanted to show all this as somehow being perceived by him as an observer, part of it and yet outside of it, too.

Wow, that all sounds pretty abstract, itself! I don't have a lot of experience with abstracts - I can tell you from what little I have, though, that they are not as easy to create as some people think (having been one of those people, even after years of art education!), and it's even harder to make something that you hope will convey something to your audience than it is to make something that you yourself understand. :vulcan:

Oh, and the O'Malleys are on Deck 6, aft ...

That's, uhm... interesting. I'm not quite sure what to make of it either. ;)

I like the clock theme, though. Even the Enterprise saucer resembles a clock face, in a way. I'd inverting the colours of the saucer or make that a "difference" layer to try tie it into the composition a little more. Although, maybe that's not goal in a abstract piece...

...maybe try taking out the backdrop of the gears and just making them an overlay on the Enterprise? That big box is kinda distracting and then you could see more of the ship...

Agreed, plus the shot of the Enterprise from the trailer looks a little out of place too. It looks kind of tacked on as an afterthought. If there was a motif like that, created by adding more pictures like that, then it'd be a neat collage, but it doesn't fit in with the rest of it.

I had an idea though, with all these circles, perhaps a sun around which one might slingshot?

In fact, yeah! Maybe circles should be the motif anyway instead of having those rectangles there you could put stuff inside circles. Maybe one circle has scenes and/or characters from time-travel episodes, maybe another has time-travel artifacts such as a backwards chronometer or an Orb of Time.

I get it, and I like it! Though I agree about the box around the clock mechanism being intrusive. I think the gears would work well semi-transparent with no background box. Especially if you could lay the central clockface gear concentric with the old E's saucer.

Spock is very fitting for this image, considering the role he is to play in Star Trek's past and future in the new film.

Is that even Spock? The lips don't look the same, and he looks a little young, even to be Quinto. I just thought it was some Vulcan.
