June 29, 2012 - Tentative Release for Trek 12!!

Cool news.
I have no problem waiting 2.5 more years.

As a matter of fact it's better than having them rush it just because XI was successful and they want to ride some praise wave.
If they managed to make XI a success after all the failures before it, they can surely afford a 3 year gap this time.

don't like the gap but oh well. I'll just have to make sure my dad's health is good. he's a strapping, active 83-year old Trekkie. I wanna watch the sequel with him just as we did this one.

Good on him! I was just wondering how many 70 and 80 ish- Trek fans are out there!

Best of health to you both!

And not a moment too soon.

In fact, old Trek died in 2005.

Can't wait for Star Trek 2 in 2012. :)

That said, three years is probably a good interval between installments - the studio doesn't need to overload the market for this thing the way they did in the 1990s.

Also, since they'll probably get 4 films at most out of this cast (before it becomes cost prohibitive), I'm glad they're stretching it out.

That too.

So, going with that as an assumption when they do the last one Pine will be about forty give-or-take a year.

What do you suppose they'll do when they recast? I'd guess that they'll reboot again to younger versions of the characters.

I'd kinda hope that once Pine & Co. decide to stop doing Trek, whoever is running things uses that as the opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction.

If these movies are successful at establishing Kirk and Spock and the others as the central characters of the Franchise - I'd say "re-establish" but we're talking about something on potentially a much bigger commercial scale than the 1970s/1980s version of Trek - then I doubt that the studio will ever depart from this scenario again except in the most dire of circumstances.

That is, if Trek fails we may see "a new direction," but as long as it succeeds they'll stick close to the core of it.

This is a major respect in which I think that the "Trek I knew is dead" perception is accurate. It's not just that the old continuity and old cast is being replaced, but the entire unusual respect in which Trek was treated creatively for four decades is gone. That internal continuity the creative folks constructed with the acceptance of the studio is now simply source material to be cherry-picked. Venom or the Vulture? Catwoman or the Penguin? Khan or The Borg?

If the next ten years continue to bring anything like the current level of success, the studio won't look back beyond the Abrams era for anything much other than creative fodder.

"Batman" and "Superman" and "Spiderman" get rebooted when a creative cycle runs its course, in order to refresh and reintroduce the property to a new generation of consumers using a contemporary style and approach.

And yeah, origins get retold or at least revisited with some frequency as a result. There's no reason that Star Trek is likely to be approached differently.

I just read this and it sounds terrific. No word on if the nacelles will continue to be blue or not.

Something wrong with pretty blue nacelles?

While it would be nice for them to be able to get the next movie out sooner, I'd rather have them take the time to make sure they do the job right. The push from December to May this last time proved valuable.
Same here

Buisness mantra posted in a local welding shop goes something similar to this:

Three ways we can do your work: good, fast, and cheep. You can have your work done to to of these.

want it good and fast? it wont be cheep
Cheep and fast = wont be good.
good and cheep = wont be fast

Since our new film isn't coming fast, they ought to do a good job on it.
