June 2008 Challenge - Adaptation

This months' challenge is all about ripping off somebody else's work.

The theme is Adaptation.

Your entry should be a recognizable Star Trek story (any incarnation you like) but must be based on a previously produced work. This can be a novel, movie, TV episode, comic book, poem or any other kind of work which has been published.

You may not base your entry on another fan fic by yourself or by anybody else. Your source material must have been professionally published. Also you may not base it on an existing episode or movie from the series you have decided to write on. Which means you cannot re-work a certain TOS or TNG episode. You can base your entry on a different series however. So if you ever wanted to write a TNG version of "Trouble With Tribbles", here's your chance.

It has to be based on a single piece of work and should not be based on an entire TV show nor should there be any crossovers.

Adaptation can be a very loose term and you can give your imagination a free reign of how you wish to adapt your source material. As the word limit is 3500 words you won't be able to do a faithful adaptation of the Lord of The Rings trilogy. Your entry should reflect the source material however, be that in plot, characters, theme or style. Remember to credit your source with a neat "Based on" line or something similar.

I think that should cover it but if you got any questions, just ask.

Closing date for this challenge is June 29th and voting will commence the following day.

Happy writing (I hope).

If you decide to write a TNG story your source material cannot come from another TNG episode. So the plot, theme, etc must be based on a different source i.e. a novel, movie, etc. Of course your characters would be Picard, Data, etc.

In other words you should not re-write a TNG episode. Unless of course the re-write is based on a different source material. I guess that would be a loophole.

Just making sure: I could write a TNG story based on A Tale Of Two Cities-correct? Or does it have to be an adaptation of something from the ST universe?

Based on the first paragraph:

I think that's a 10-4, good buddy. :techman:

So...

Take anything previously professionally published and turn it into Star Trek?

O-kay.

mine's done. me sister's got it to double-check my grammar...

i've done this kinda thing before... "Deception" from IST was an adap of the opening scene of Mission: Impossible, Alias: Storm (IST) was an adap of The Bourne Identity movie, On Duranium Wings (IST) is a complete rip-off of Hunt for Red October and The Specialists - an SO spin-off - is an adap of The A-Team...

Probably was, but as I understood from the op was we were to take trek from one series and adapt it to another. That was incorrect, so I am just trying to clearify.

oops forgot about this bit - Here's my entry - thanks Mistral for the reminder

This is an intriguing challenge but I think it requires a few braincells to be burned on it. Therefore here is my rather feeble non-too-serious entry. It'll tide people over till you get the real stuff up.

Ok, so we can't adapt a fan fic to a fan fic, but can we adapt a movie to a fan fic?

Whatever you end up writing will be by definition a fan fic. But yes, the idea of this challenge is to turn your source material (movie, tv episode, book, song, etc) into a recognizable Star Trek fan fic. Any series or characters you like, canon or otherwise.
