the polls were great!
and it had thousands and thousands of individual comments posted on tv shows when they leaped over a shark like a Fonzie

4 areas of it caught my attention recently, jumptheshark's coverage of Lost, BSG, Dollhouse DS9
the site was one of the few places that called DS9 for what it was.
It was one of the few sites hit hard on any tv show and openly said the Emperor has no clothes
Some shows or movies or musicians are just difficult to criticize on fansites because there some Spielberg or Madonna fanclub patrolling the internet or there is the zombie fandom following these series like the Whedonphiles.

It had a lot of interesting and insightful comments, its a shame it suddenly had it's heart ripped out and it got cloned with watered-down criticism providing nothing more than stealth adverts for current tv shows

Yeah, God forbid if people actually like a show. Its an affront to the bashers whose opinions are the law.

Many Whedonphiles behaved like borderline trolls. I mean seriously a save-dollhouse campaign before the 1st episode was even broadcast!?

As for Moore BSG and Eick fans, I have most of those bbs posters on my block list after they started spamming my pm box with abuse. Orac sums up their behaviour nicely

The regular assurances that anyone who doesn't watch it is stupid / unsophisticated / ignorant / whatever don't encourage me to try again.

At least the JJ/Lost fans have a bit of manners and dignity about them

Flaming is attacking a poster personally, rather than addressing their opinions or defending one's own. It has a way of quickly de-railing any productive discussion. If you feel that it's a valid form of discourse, that's your business of course, but saying that people who feel differently shouldn't have a place to share opinions in a different way seems pretty unreasonable.

I really liked the commentary on the JTS site. A lot of times the comments were about all you could find on old, short-lived shows that you could barely remember from childhood. Many posts pointed out things that I hadn't noticed or had forgotten. And a lot of them were really funny. And people would sometimes include rebuttals for earlier postings, but there were no screen names associated so it was hard to get personal.

That's just it, though. In my view, bashing isn't a productive discussion in the first place.
And from the way, the OP was worded, and judging from who created this thread, that's what I understand those boards to be about.

I didn't say they shouldn't have such a place.
I just said, I won't shed any tears if it is shut down.
And I also admit that there's a bit of Schadenfreude involved, since in my experience, bashers very rarely display the ability and willingness to discuss in a civilised or at least reasonable tone.

You have no idea how far some of these "Save Dollhouse" and "RonMoore's Battlestar Fans" would go...and I'm not talking about far away turf like some Whedonesque site or Skiffy's BSG forum. I'm talking about how much they trolled right here on Trekbbs!!

Not once did the Trekbbs moderation team ever call him on this trolling!!

Because there has been a gang of about a dozen or so of them they got away with a lot of BS here ovr the years. This guy 'Empty' even left me vulgar messages and threatening pm's to my inbox, I've still got some of them. About a year and a half ago they chased the wife of RonMoore off the internet because of some political/education discussion they were having with her at Skiffy and it suddenly got real nasty and b!tchy. These so-called RDM fans even go as far as to online bullying by defacing people's facebook or myspace accounts. The threats mean nothing to me cos I know what these trolls are like,
they are online drama queens nothing more and I'd probably break them with one arm tied behind my back.

What bothers many is the hassle of dealing with trolls and their flaming

Jumptheshark was a place where people could criticize or vent while staying at a site with a happy atmosphere, a cool critical site that was flame free

now its sold out and hard its heart removed

That's some weird behaviour - but you do troll up a storm everytime nuBSG is mentioned - although you've never crossed into threatening PM territory as far as I know. You definitely have an obsession with the show and its fans though.

MasterOfOrion, you know how protests about moderator actions are handled. Continued complaint outside of the MA forum will only cause you trouble. For your own sake, don't do it again.
