Jumpsuit question

Wingsley

Commodore

I know that female characters that were part of the Enterprise / Starfleet personnel throughout TOS were seen in a variety of uniforms. Dehner and Smith were seen in the older pre-TOS turtleneck-and-trousers uniform. Women were seen most often in the big-collar-and-mini-skirt outfits, but there was also a big-collar-and-trousers outfit as well ("The Man Trap").

I'm not sure, but I think that in either "The Naked Time" and/or "Journey to Babel", we even saw Nurse Chapel in a jumpsuit during surgery. Were there any other female crew members shown in TOS wearing the jumpsuit uniform? If so, when? Is there confirmation on Chapel wearing a jumpsuit?

I have another question as well:

Were there ever any Enterprise security or otherwise armed TOS-era male personnel shown in jumpsuits, as opposed to the usual redshirt-and-trousers uniform?

Chapel also wore the jumpsuit in Operation -- Annihilate! As for men, there were plenty of guys in the red and blue jumpsuits. The kind we saw Simon Van Gelder take from the transporter tech. There were lots in Balance of Terror.

Uhura wore a red jumpsuit at one point in the show when she's doing repairs to her console, IIRC.

It was blue for some reason And worn over her Red uniform.

Which means Uhura wore all three colors. I think she's the only "regular" to do so.

The wider variety of uniforms and work clothes in earlier episodes added to the verisimilitude that was missing in later ones. They just clearly try so much harder in the first season than in later ones and beyond the writing and the directing.

I always thought it would have been neat if Scotty had worn one from time to time. It would have given his character sort of a working man's "getting his hands dirty" vibe.

...Sulu wore red?

(Ahh, Mirror Sulu?)

BTW, what did the crew usually wear beneath the wraparoundish jumpsuits or coveralls? Should that be assumed to represent standard Starfleet underwear, also to be found beneath the pants-and-shirt style?

I always figured it was the black tee undershirt as seen in "The Naked Time."

I thought we saw a black shirt peaking out from the neck area of the jumpsuits, similar to the black undershirt seen on Kirk in the first season.

They weren't Starfleet, but Dr.Adams' people wore the blue jumpsuit with the hideous bird in the hand emblem. Some of them were armed once Kirk started causing trouble.

Good point.

I suppose they did in the film series. He spends most of them wearing either a radiation suit or his waistcoat with toolbelt. I always wondered why he wore a white command turtleneck when in the waistcoat and the ochre one when wearing his bomber jacket or tunic.

Ah, I stand corrected.;)

Just a fandom thought: I wonder if Uhura was going the command route (wearing yellow, initially) then decided to remain in Communications. It would explain why she not only can navigate the ship, but can handle communications....as well as the science(?) station...

My fandom idea about her wearing the blue jumpsuit is that there were simply no jumpsuits in her color, since other crew probably took jumpsuits for their own tasks.

Operation: Annihilate was interesting, in that we get to see three regulars wearing the jumpsuits:

I think I read somewhere that Nichelle Nichols hated the green/chartreuse uniform they put her in initially for "Corbomite."

And you have to admit, most women looked a lot better in the red or blue, while the pale green was kind of blah on them.
