Jumping into Destiny without having read Titan

The Destiny trilogy should arrive at my home through the post sometime next week, but am concerned about the USS Titan being prominent. I have not read any of the Titan books aside from the first, and all I remember from it is that its chief medical officer resembles a dinosaur and frightens people initially.

I intend to restart the Titan series, as I've enjoyed other works by its authors, but I want to tackle Destiny first. Is there anything developed in the Titan series that would be useful to know when engaging Destiny?

I'm essentially asking for relevant background information for Destiny, but none that would outright spoil the Titan series.

Also, are Worlds of Deep Space Nine and The Left Hand of Destiny the only novels that feature Ezri Dax prominently? I know she also plays a part.

(I'm up to speed on Picard's Destiny background, having read Greater than the Sum.)

Ezri has a character arc that runs through the entire DS9 relaunch (Memory Beta it if you want the whole list) that mostly just results in her breaking up with Bashir and deciding to switch to command. That all ends in 2377, and Destiny is in 2381, so it's been a while since we've heard from her. Everything about Ezri's backstory you'll be told in Destiny is new information; you're not missing anything there.

As far as Titan goes, a few ongoing character arcs come into play, but nothing that the trilogy doesn't explain. It's certainly designed so that even someone totally new to Titan could read those parts and understand them.

I think you shouldn't worry, and just read the books. If you have any other questions, someone here will answer, I'm sure.

I'd read the first Titan before Destiny, but I hadn't read any of the recent TNG stuff, so I didn't know who any of the "imposters" working alongside Picard, Worf and Geordi were. I got along just fine (but sadly didn't warm to the post-TNG E-E crew, even when I went back and read the others:()

All right, thanks. I've read the DS9 relaunch through to the end of the Mission: Gamma series, so I'm familiar with her switch to command.

I'm looking forward to reading more of Chen.

I think Destiny was being written at the same time as GTTS Chen isn't in much of it sadly. She does play a pretty big role in Losing the Piece, though.

The rising to command thing done very well I thought, the break up with Bashir being done very badly too.

I hadnt read a Star Trek book in years befor picking up and reading Destiny (had never even heard of the Titan series) and had no trouble following it.

She was in Singular Destiny which was after the Destiny series, but we need more Aventine and Dax books. Certainly I'd pick them up before any Voyager or TOS book.

She will be playing a big role in Zero Sum Game, the first Typhon Pact book.

I just read Destiny book 1 without much knowledge of the TNG era novels since 1st contact. I did read a Titan novel 3 years ago but I had forgotten all the characters. I think Destiny does a good job at detailing the characters. There's lots of ships and crews which can be a bit daunting to some. But the author manages to make everyone seem real and individual. It's a massive challenge he executes well.

I found the new E crew confused me more than Ezri's backstory did. With Ezri it was kind of like, "Oh, she's in command. That's about it." But I had very little idea what was going on on the E. However, that didn't take away from the story, it just made the characters seem more trivial.

I read all the TNG books up until Destiny (in the same month... I love my job :)) I had only read the first Titan novel when it first came out, and only the DS9 novels up until Mission Gamma #1. I plan to go back and read all the stuff I missed next year, but I really didn't miss anything by reading Destiny first. There's really only one line that really spoils another book... a Titan character death from what I remember.
