jump cut

Captain
Captain
i am at home for two weeks recovering from shoulder surgery and so i decided to watch the new star trek movie again and alone so that i could fined something in this film for me. i think it is a entertaining movie but no where near my favorite trek production, but i have a new complaint. there is a huge jump cut right at the beginning of the film that i myself missed until now. forgive me but i am one handed for a while. ok the scene where spock first walks onto the bridge he ends up right in front of the captains chair next to the helm console, then they cut to the very next shot and spock is way over starting to set down at his station. this is call a jump cut because spock jumps to his station from where he was in front of the big chair. now i know that this little technical mistake does not bother 95 percent of the fans out there, and i also know that this is not the first time there have been jump cuts in a trek film, but it bothers me because for one thing i work in tv as a editor and everyone loves to defend this movie. so what do you folks think. watch the scenes and you decide. this may have been talked about before i do not know. have fun

Yes, the jump cut does indeed exist but I don't remember anyone mentioning it before.
I can't imagine myself being bothered or caring much about such a thing to be honest.

Does it deserve its own thread or some lengthy defend/bash the movie discussion ?
No.

well yes i agree with the both of you that the movie has more problems than just this edit . to each his own. it is just a sloppy editing job to me.

I didn't like the way he cut from Scotty shouting to Spock on the bridge after he fell out of the water tubing.

Something never seems right with that cut..

you know at the very end of the film after all the excitment the crew is getting ready to depart on their new adventures, crew members are stating that systems are ready and so forth. like weapons ready ( whats that about ) communications ready. but the problem is that spock has not come onto the bridge as the first officer and kirk has not even come out of the turbo lift, so all that dialog just is awkward!

More than that "jump cut," the thing that got me at the start of the film is how Spock steps into the turbolift in engineering, and in about 2 seconds later is on the bridge. Just seems way too fast, especially if the ship is so much bigger.

The movie is certainly not "sloppy" in some respect that is more noticable than the rushed and limited jobs done on many previous Trek films (Trek V and VI, for example, or "Generations" or...)

Still, if the online critics are now reduced to kvetching about editing choices that they consider "mistakes" then surely they have run out of material and will shortly subside...

BTW, Kirk is not "coming out of the turbolift" in the last scene. He is standing on the bridge having entered through the door leading from the corridor - unlike TOS, this bridge has two entrances and both of them don't lead to elevators. Much more sensible, and yet another improvement.

I hope you are feeling better soon. Do every bit of physical therapy they tell you to do. That is the only way to have a full recovery.

I can understand why it would bother you. As someone who has worked on films in the past, I occasionally see things that bother me. I also know that few if any others probably noticed what ticked me off.

Be patient with those who do not 'get it' like you do. Hopefully others will be as patient with another fan who is affected differently than they.

This is the goal here. Have fun and enjoy Trek and the fellowship on TrekBBS.

Speaking of terrible jump cuts, it's always annoyed me that there's a jump cut right before the famous jump cut in the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Takes me right out of the moment every time.

One cut I really like, and something mentioned in the commentary, comes when George Kirk begins issuing the order to fire after Robau is killed. His line gets cut-off by a jump cut to the Kelvin letting loose on the Narada. Its an unusual cut, and for me it really just works, just like the guys said in the commentary.

thanks sector 7 i am not looking forward to physical therapy. the jump cut does not piss me off it is just that everyone on here defineds the movie as if it is the greatest trek film ever and the holy grail of star trek films and that just is not so. that kind of editing mistake is just not exceptable especially from someone like jj. this is basic editing. i love when you point out all the failings of this film and everyone gets there pants in a bunch.

i need to check this out. 2001 is one of my all time favorite classics

i love this. just what i was talking about. a jump cut is not a editing choice, it is a mistake and that is it. you can rationalize it all you want to talk yourself into believing what you want but it is bad editing and is a no no in film and broadcasting. jj should have done a better job. maybe he is not as good as everyone thinks. sorry again for being one handed on this.
