July Writing Challenge - Major Malfunction

So close to being done. I don't know what clicked for this month, but its given me a great idea. Its getting close to being over 3k words, so I'm hoping I'll be able to trim it without loosing the story.

Our challenge theme for the month of July is "Major Malfunction." The challenge is to write a story where something goes terribly wrong: a ship suffers a major system breakdown, a character suffers a severe physical, emotional, or psychological breakdown, etc. In short - something gets broke! Whether or not it gets fixed is up to you.

The rules: (Yada, yada, yada)
Any Star Trek era is acceptable, whether canon or your own created characters. Word limit is 3000. A link to your entry must be posted in this thread to qualify. Please submit original work only, not a story that has been previously posted.

Deadline for submission:
31 July at 11:59 p.m., GMT.

Oh, my goodness, I have a 2,446 word excerpt from a larger story I'm still working on that is perfect for this -- is that allowed? It hasn't been posted anywhere yet ... but it is an excerpt, not a whole story.

"Star Trek: The Captain's Table"
"The Best Laid Plans Of Mice And Men"

2260 ENT/TOS-era Adventure featuring a well-rounded starship captain on a not-quite-pivotal 'First Contact'-gone-somewhat-awry. Subspace amplifiers have been 'twitchy' along the Klingon Frontier. Captain Cross of the Daedalus-Class U.S.S. Crichton has been deployed to find out what the hell's going on. Only to discover that the fledgling Federation is being investigated by a small computer-dependant bipedal species, The Binars, attempting an awkward 'First Contact'.

The story he's trading for good food & companionship of fellow Captains at The Captain's Table, is that story.

As long as it hasn't been previously posted or published, an excerpt is fine.

I think I should have a story for this challenge - it's been giving me no end of trouble, but I think I've thought of a way to get it finished. Just hope I have time!

Ok. I bit the bullet and did it, my first fanfic ever. The story woke me up in the middle of the night, and wouldn't leave me alone.

Enabran Tain wasn't always the head of the Obsidian Order. Nor is any armor truly unbreachable. The story takes place in Prime Cardassia, several years before this imposing Cardassian gained his full power and reputation and a few months before a life-changing event would alter his path forever.

His Strongest Weakness has a word count of 1874. http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=3247817#post3247817

Okay here's mine

Not Everyone's Happy

It's set after Star Trek XI.

Technically it doesn't fit the challenge, because there isn't actually a malfunction - they fix things to avoid the malfunction. I'll let The Lone Redshirt (or the voters) decide if it's valid.

I apologise in advance for the complete lack of scientific accuracy. I just make this stuff up.

And here's mine, as late as ever: 'Rain'

It clocks in at 2011 words and is set not long after WWIII and First Contact. And yeah, it's not really a technical malfunction.

Last day of the challenge-and I've been haunting the board for the last 8 hours waiting for Starkers to drop some mind-blowing, last-second thing on us.:shifty:

I've really enjoyed reading the entries for this challenge. I decided not to enter my excerpt because even though it's been cut from my story, it's full of spoilers for it. So I'm just happily reading all these great entries and feeling oh-so-untalented in comparison! This has been great. I can't wait to see what the next challenge is!

Aww, man, I was hoping we'd get to see it, but I can understand not wanting to give away spoilers from the greater context.
