July Challenge - Ptrope

Intriguing challenge - great way to combine some of my hobbies into one thing (not NASCAR, necessarily, but cars, for sure! ;))

I decided to really customize the "Car of Tomorrow" - the Dodge Challenger isn't approved for the series (yet - I read rumors, though ... ) but since this is the future, I figure I'll give it a shot and see if the details can live on the existing bodywork; I had to move the grille down to get it vertical, but the slope of the nose just might let it work okay.

Once I had "Challenger," and being Star Trek we also have a space element, I decided to pay tribute to lost heroes and dedicate it to the Challenger 7 who lost their lives in 1986:

Cool! Nice putting Scobee as the driver. I even noticed you put some highlights on the rear panels for that distinctive "shoulder".

Very cool. The Challenger scheme looks pretty legit! If you download the program I posted in the contest thread you can view the car in 3D. You'll notice your black stripes aren't wide enough on the front of the car to match up with the hood.

Cool viewer! Thanks! It doesn't look to map the car right, though, even though I did it on the template - the hood and the back 2/3 of the body map okay, but not the front, back, or fronts of the fenders ...

Not sure about the stripes - I used the wire mesh layer as a guide to cross the seams. I'll go back and take a look ... after I get some sleep :). EDIT: Okay, I see now that the scale of the front and the top are a little different, and by duplicating the stripes on the hood to the nose, they went from being about 3/4 the width of the polygon to less than half ... - tough to check, though, because the viewer seems to use the previous body, not the COT - I can load the DirectX COT body, but it doesn't show the texture then ... d'oh! :D

Did you load the DodgeCOT.x file first? That may be the problem. Also, make sure you file is named DodgeCOT.jpg

Ahhhh! THAT helps! :) Thanks!

Okay, now that's just neat ... :D

Thanks! Actually, since you posted that, I replaced the star in the Starfleet insignia on the hood with a shuttle silhouette - I thought the shapes were similar enough that it would be a nice touch :).

Flux, just out of curiosity, it appears the game allows you to change the quarter window shape in the mapping - it appears your Honda (very cool, BTW :bolian: ) has a much thinner C-pillar than the other cars. I kept the windows from the template, but figured they could use these printed films to overlay a thicker C-pillar image, since the Challenger has a pretty hefty one; the previewer doesn't seem to pick that up, sticking with a default map for those windows, it seems.

I like this challenge - it's fun! :)

The different makes have different window configurations. My Honda is actually built on the Toyota template/model, and using it's windows.

Is the "Romulan" insignia supposed to be a beverage thing? I kept looking for the word "Ale" attached to it...

Yep, it's Romulan Ale (this is based upon an actual product's logo, too!)

Ahhhh... then my only suggestion would be to emphasis that a bit more. Until you zoomed in like that, the word "ALE" was effectively invisible.

Maybe big freakin' letters (ala how "DooM" is sometimes spelled?) below the Bird, sorta fitting the bird-beak area?

Just a suggestion.

(BTW... where do they sell that stuff???)

Just found this: actual Dodge Challenger body for the NASCAR Nationwide (formerly Busch) Cup 'Car of Tomorrow.' So I wasn't too far off ;).

Wow! I hadn't seen that until now! Nice find. Apparently Ford will run the '10 Mustang...so you just know that Chevy will run the Camaro. I think it's cool how they're switching to the sporty, "younger" cars for Nationwide while Sprint Cup still runs the more "grown up" sedans.
