July Art Challenge - Flux Capacitor

This challenge really got me thinking, specifically about things that would have been "unthinkable" for whatever reason when the show began back in the 60's. I was reminded how the studio execs had the producers remove Number One from the cast due to the belief that a woman in such a high position in the chain of command of a starship was too much to expect audiences to believe.

Well...I figured, if that was unthinkable to them back then, what would they have thought about this?

Now to me..this seems like an awesome alternate version of the show or at least a cool spin-off...which never would have flown back in that era for a number of (really, really stupid) reasons. I see it as a bit of commentary on how far we've progressed as a society in a short time...since a show with a strong female captain had already shown to be not only accepted but loved in many cases.

If nothing else, it's interesting to think of the many Enterprise missions with Nyota Uhura as ship's captain. :)

Nice idea! That would be a neat way to start the next JJTrek movie -- have a future Uhuru in the command chair needing help (someway) from the younger crew, or something. (Something like a homage to TUC with it starting with Sulu in the chair of the Excelsior.)

Anywho -- one quibble I have is that the color of the wood and the color of the tunic are too similar in the one photo. It kinda of makes her look like she has four arms, or is missing an arm (with the way she's sitting) at first glance. Would it be possible to darken the wood a bit for more contrast?

Cheers,
-CM-

Hmmm...this has potential - maybe Photoshop a capture of Uhura actually wearing a command uniform from "Corbomite Maneuver", I think it was?

Also, when she took over navigation in "Balance of Terror", she definitely seemed to have an air of command about her. She acted like she had some serious poise and awareness of where she was, and didn't ever appear to have a problem taking over a station that was not communications-based.

Might make for some good source material, anyway...

After sleeping on it, I agree. I'll either make a change to the wood or the uniform color...or both.

Yeah, I scanned through TrekCore's shots from "The Corbomite Manuever" and Mudd's Women, the two episodes in which she wore the gold and she was either holding her hand up to her earpiece, had her hands on her console or as in TCM, looked incredibly bored and tired. I'll check out "Balance..." to see if there are any better shots than the one I used.
