July 2012 Challenge - Star Trek Ala ?

Stoek

In all of it's various incarnations and in all forms of media Star Trek has often made use of settings and styles from a diverse range of influences often to the great delight of fans everywhere.

Whether it's the 1930's gangland antics of A Piece of the Action, or Trek's homage to Die Hard with Starship Mine, one of the most consistent strengths of the Star Trek universe is how a clever writer can incorporate an influence from almost anything and still have it fit.

So your challenge this month is to tell a story that either incorporates elements of another genre, mileu etc or is written in a style or tone that borrows from other works. Such as Christopher Bennet did when he gave his first DTI novel Watching the Clock a flavor clearly influenced by the old Dragnet series.

As for the nuts and bolts...

10,000 word count

May be any series, time period, etc.

Original characters, series, and the like are fine.

Deadline is July 31st.

I think I've covered the usual big questions but I'm sure if anyone has others they'll speak right up.

Good luck to everyone. I look forward to seeing what you all come up with.

This is a truly interesting idea. I think my main issue will be to avoid anything too obscure as a reference. Hmm.

I like it - and I already have an idea I've wanted to write for ages that fits perfectly. :) I love it when a plan comes together... ;)

Me too. I've got something in my head that will blow minds. NOw i just need to find the time!

Can't help thinking I could rustle up a Trek story in the genre of "Fifty Shades"... but it wouldn't be fit to post round here. :p

Isn't Fifty Shades Twilight fanfic rather than Star Trek fanfic?

It started out life as a Twilight fanfic and then the author did a rewrite making it more "original". (Full Disclosure I am no fan of either series) So a Trek fic in the style of 50 would be in keeping with this months challenge.

But not within the board posting rules, I fear. ;)

*L* Well to me part of the fun of these challenges (and the inherent limitations within the board rules) is trying to figure out how to make something that might seem on the surface not to be a fit, work in the context of the limitations within which I'm working. Not exactly identical but my favorite example from professional Trek-lit is How Much For Just The Planet wherein a Gilbert and Sullivan style musical comedy is made to work as a Trek story. And amazingly well in my opinion.

Hey, um...I'm about halfway done with my story. Think you could re-do the deadline? So there'll be competition? :)

Of days? Just a few--say, by Friday night, at the latest, I should have it done...but I hope to have it finished and posted before that.

Will that work? :)

No. Minutes. Type fast. :P

But seriously Friday night works for me.

So hear that all you near slackers? You've all got 3 whole extra days. I expect a flood of awesomeness.
