Since the comics are often so satirical and meta, I wish they would do something like that.

Since the comics are often so satirical and meta, I wish they would do something like that.
Certainly the Dredd comic does go into a lot of stuff, not only the dark an gritty, but sometimes a lighter side. I remember a brief two-page story about Dredd using all the Justice Department's Forensic and Scientific services to track down someone who dropped a bubble-gum wrapper. A TV series is ideal, and they can also build up some things in the background, like the robot uprising for example.
They do seem to be going for a more "futuristic" city (almost Coruscant-like) than what we saw in the Dredd movie, which would indicate they are more going for something with a similar spirit to the comics.
I demand the show do a West Wing style political drama storyline centering around Mayor Dave. Particularly his election, complete with the inevitable parallels to the current political climate.
Or the Stallone movie?

Judge Dredd: Origins
Judge Dredd: America
(and/or) are the place(s) to start.
^Not sure 'Origins' is the best place to start. It's just a bunch of flashbacks to the days of Fargo and the founding of the justice system. While that may sound ideal, remember that for 90% of the stories, none of that crap even matters. While Dredd is obviously the main character and it's interesting to get a little background, the *real* star is the Meg itself and it's citizens. Dredd and the other Judges are often more or less bystanders to all the craziness.
'America' is probably ideal though as it explores some of the core ideas of the setting and plants a lot of seeds for later stories. Other than that I'd just advise someone to take a look at all the Epics and major arcs and just pick one that looks interesting.
'The Pit' might be a good idea if one is looking to see what the TV show might look like. Dredd gets shunted off to run some rough, backwater sector house filled with misfit Judges. A punishment detail basically. It's very munch an ensemble piece with Dredd in more of a supporting role.

Watch the Karl Urban movie, that's a good place to start.
The first IDW series is actually a good place to start, as they are relatively traditional Dredd stories, as opposed to the second series, which sees Dredd taken out of his familiar surroundings. They are, however, not set in the 2000AD-verse, but in their own, seperate universe.
Cursed Earth was the first major storyline. Again, Dredd is taken out of his usual surroundings. As the title says, the majority of the story doesn't take place in Mega-City One, but on the way to Mega-City Two over the Cursed Earth. It's a good one, but it's not necessarily the right story for getting an idea of what Dredd comics typically are.
As strange as it may sound, if one were just looking to get a handle on the character and also happened to be a Batman fan then 'Judgement on Gotham' may be worth checking out. Such crossovers are usually silly, but this one worked astonishingly well IIRC and stayed true to both characters.
The 200AD app has a bunch of JD collections and a few did catch my attention, so I was just wondering what your thoughts on them are.
